The media has been critical of the Ministry of Environment authorizing a system of power barges in Azua coastal waters. The barges were authorized to install themselves in the border area of a protected park area. Deputy Minister of Environment Indhira de Jesus has defended the installation saying it was installed in the protected area buffer zone and because the power was needed and the company agreed to take extra measures to mitigate damages to the environment. The Friedrich Ebert Foundation is calling for the revoking of the permit.
