September 2004

It gives me great honor and privilege to present to you the Dominican American National Roundtable Report on Dominican-American Voter Capacity in the United States.

The Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR) is a non-partisan Washington, D.C.-based organization that advocates for the empowerment of Dominicans in the United States and Puerto Rico. The DANR is a 501(c)(3) organization created in 1997 and incorporated in 2000. We are the first and still the only national organization advocating on behalf of the over 1 million Dominicans living in the U.S. and its territories. Our main focus is in the areas of education, health, economic development, and political empowerment.

2004 will be a critical year in the United States. With the Presidential and Congressional elections taking place this year, there will be an increased focus on Dominican voters like never before. This report creates the platform and the evidence of the capacity for Dominicans to vote in the U.S. elections.

In 2002, the DANR embarked in a bold initiative to register thousands of voters and we are pleased to report that that we have succeeded in that initiative. With the completion of this report, it will allow the DANR and other organizations to conduct future voter registration programs in a smarter and targeted fashion.

The foundation of the DANR lies in our ability to unify the many Dominican communities around the country and each community’s ability to send a unified message to their respective elected officials. With the release of this report, we can now quantify that ability.

I would like to thank Deni Taveras, for her outstanding research on this project; Dennis Rivera, President of 1199-SEIU; DANR Boardmember Nelson Valdez of 1199-SEIU; and Dr. Ramona Hernandez, Director of the Dominican Studies Institute at The City College of New York for their support and guidance. I would also like to thank the current and past DANR boardmembers and staff who played an active leadership role in this project.

With that said, I present to you our report: “A Study of Dominican-American Voter Capacity”.

Sincerely,

Cid Wilson President Dominican American National Roundtable.
