Has anyone else experienced the new overstay fee lately? This thread seems to have turned into a residency discussion.

Yes, the overstay fees did go up. I returned to the US from POP on Jan. 13th after staying 31 days. Had to pay 2.500 pesos.

Anyone had trouble going to Haiti and crossing back over?

I probably need to do that and just pay what I'm already at instead of it going up more.

Can anyone tell me if this is so or not? I was told today by a friend that the Tarriff (the new ones) where going to triple by next yr and that the staying time was going from 6 months to 3 months and then off you go without DR Citizenship which is $600US / person. (up to April 1) We return yrly for 6 months and want to be as prepared as possible. so any insight would be appreciated .. thanks.

It is a very uneasy time for a lot of people, the RD could close the doors on the white man very soon not a good time to put any money into the RD. Next time you come bring nothing and take anything you have back home with you. It is going to be hard to sell things any more no will want to
buy things if thy can not stay.

DR Citizenship which is $600US / person. What does this mean? If the exit fee is going to be in the area of $600? I have spoken to several attorneys and residency is 4 times that much and has to be redone every year for saeveral years in a row, nobody seems to have an exact answer how many.

For 600$, u can do residency ureself........

Of course it wasn't a big deal in the past...didn't really matter who knew what about your immigration status.

Would be tough to oversee or liquidate property or real assets if you can't get into the country.

Realistically no you can't. If you cannot speak Spanish well, the inexperienced gringo would be stymied at the very first hurdle thrown up by Migracion. We all know from experience that the process if not usually seamless and easy. Additional documents or changes to documents are often needed, additional fees paid or other requirements do present themselves. I have no doubt that I could not have done my residency without help. We have to keep in mind that the majority of residency applications come from people who are not already living in the DR, do not have easy access to Santo Domingo that doesn't involve a plane trip, and have zero experience dealing with Migracion and all the patience and an comprehension that this involves

A person comfortable speaking with and capable of speaking effectively with bureaucrats, navigating a large unfamiliar city travelling to various required locations and someone who has lots of time to spend in said large city may well be able to complete the process themselves. Most are far better off having a representative do all this for them despite the extra expense.

Residency renewals may be a different story as time living in country helps.

Unproductive fear mongering and untrue as well. It might closes the door on people too Lazy, cheap, or dishonest to follow through with proper procedures. Do you fit into any of those categories?
