here's a little update and commentary on the Ontario health system vs the RD one.

Admittedly, they are serving a larger population in Canada.
From Toronto to Windsor/Detroit is about 250 miles.
In that distance, Ontario has ONE cancer clinic outside TO.... ONE, in London ON , where I am .

To say they are overloaded, underfunded and crowded would be an understatement.

I am really
in treatment' after a 3 lymph node removal.
I have my biopsies and even my tissue samples and Pathology slides.

I submitted all to the clinic.
It took 13 days to call me with an appt... I was knocking on the door regularly to spur them along.
The appt is for June 2.... submission was May 4.

I was disappointed.

I called the Henry Ford Clinic in Detroit... 2 hrs away.
In 24hrs they called back with an appt in 6 days... May 24.

More service.

Ontario's problem seems to funding... no dough.
They rarely use their PET m/c here in London - too costly.
Hospital occupancy has exceeded 100% for 2.5 yrs.
Wait times are long. This a regional problem , it seems not province wide.

So, we'll see how it develops.
Henry Ford has a special line for Cdns... easy to do.

In RD, one week after my node removal I saw the doctor - stitches out & biopsy (positive)

All my Rd biopsies came back in a week or so.
Canada ? almost 2 weeks...... more backlog.

After stitch removal I went straight to the oncologist.... 3 flrs up.
He suggested NoAmerica could help me more than RD - an honest evaluation, thank God.

All in all, I cannot fault the RD system.... not all countries are equal to US/Canada in equipment, drugs and skills.

If I need treatment and if it's possible, I will try to have it in RD.

Sorry I missed your post when it first went up. Good luck to you and I totally agree about getting treatment in la rep dom. There are some darn good doctors and dentists in la rep dom.

Keep us posted as I know you don't want me sneaking off and trying to find where you hide that Weber Grill. LOL

Major cities have the best options. I have heard great things about Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Ottawa has a good cancer clinic but they are the major centres in Ontario.

Kingston also has a cancer treatment center. Like in most countries small towns have limited medical options as specialist are in the large centers.

Princess Margaret apparently has 24hr cancer treatment..... I hear good things too.
Just inconvenient for me.

The London Regional Clinic is good, just underfunded and slow

Here's the latest article -
http://www.lfpress.com/2016/05/19/london-hospital-overcrowding-30-months-and-counting-ndp-documents

Odd , because Deb Matthews is from London - her seat is still here, I think.
Her sister is married to David Peterson.
And yet, the funding seems to be lacking.

I'll use the Henry Ford as 2nd opinion (or vice versa) as things play out.

Ontarians should read the above article.... you could be next for cutbacks.

Last Nov/Dec, the gov't decided our area had spent too much on Knees & hips....
we have a world renowned clinic here... best of the best

So they cut back ....
all surgeries were cut to 50% until further notice.... a money saving / budgetary move.
Many people were shoved back in the wait list.

Doesn't make sense to me

William I think you are making an excellent choice to go to Detroit, God Bless and stay strong.

Currently in Ontario there is a WAR on Doctors, orchestrated by an extremely far left Liberal Government ( what else is new)...The Liberals say they don't have enough money for Doctors, yet their Public Civil Servants are the HIGHEST paid in North America... The highest indebted State and the highest paid Civil Servants. Ontario Tax payers are taking it up the arse. With twice the debt of California, Ontario is now the world?s most indebted sub-sovereign borrower, and is deeply in trouble.. There is NO money left for Medical care..

OUCH !!!

I didn't know all that..... spooky.

I need to watch the cost of care... drugs , etc.
I may be straddling the border to try the best of both worlds.

My hope is that my lymph node removal got all of it.... nothing more left.
Some scan will tell me that.....

As I said, Ontario is reluctant to turn on the PET machine..... too costly.

There is also a PET Machine in Hamilton, but that would be a far drive for you. It's part of Mcmaster University and its FREE if you can get an appointment or a referral from a Doctor.

Did you consider Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo? They are pretty well known and equipped.

They even have a gamma knife (not that you'd need that) which is something I discovered several years ago when Chiri's colleague had a child that needed gamma knife surgery.

http://www.cancer.gov/research/nci-role/cancer-centers/find/roswellpark

Although not for cancer, one of my children was treated there last fall, and had a very good outcome.

Thanks Prof.... Detroit is an hour closer and serve the Ontario patients very well
Special phone line.

I just finished this morning with them..

I'll report this b/c someone, anyone, may need this stuff sometime
We area ll at risk - the over-65 crowd - 40-50% of us, sun or not
Speed counts here

just finished with The Henry Ford Clinic in Detroit.

Immunotherapy starts after the PET-CT scan... booked for Saturday for the scan
Yervoy and perhaps Yervoy + Pembrol

Blood work done, all ready.... much faster than Canada

PET-CT is the combination scan.... clearer/easier to read

I have an appointment in Canada June 2 but will have all these results for that meeting... should speed that side up.... 2nd opinion.

Feeling much better knowing the wheels are turning

Details:

we are doing my bloodwork and a PET-CT scan
Blood = done .....scan = Saturday

they are reviewing my pathology reports
molecular... looking for BRAF V600E

If scan is negative - use Yervoy
if positive - use Pembrol too.... a combo

Then some things i don't understand yet-
EMR 200647-001
anti-PDL + TGF - Beta Trap
anti csr-1 + NIVO

working on it,

Dr. WW

Yes, Princess Margaret has 24 hr bookings... I hear
You can get Chemo at 3am... they tell me

Initially, that sounds great , Huh???

But think of it an as efficiency study - a business problem (my background = MBA )

Chronic overtime is a symptom of a system flaw.... needing correction.

The system is so overloaded, there are not enough hours in the day to serve the patients.
For health care, that's is a SERIOUS issue

A restaurant, a car wash, not so bad.....

an overbooked hospital !!!!!

Think about it...........
