Buster,
you should take a boat trip out to the north water sometime.

I am told that not that far out - a few miles - you can stand waist deep on top of a submerged mountain range.

It's this range that gives the quakes , I understand.

Stepping back to a big picture -
that range extends thru the Gulf of Mexico to blend with the Yucatan Peninsula and then flow northward to blend with the San Andreas fault in CA.

One large rift in the earth's crust.... a plate, they call it ??

Study that up and let us know.....huh??

There is a patchwork of faults that directly impact DR. There are three subduction faults where a tectonic plate slides under another plate or a section of fault slides under another and 2 major transform faults where the opposite sides of the fault are slipping past each other horizontally (left to right) .

The fault you refer to, named the Hispanola Fault, is out to sea in the Atlantic running more or less east to west and makes one of its closest approaches to the island near Puerto Plata. Along this fault the North American Plate is subucting under the Caribbean Plate. The NA plate is causing an undersea ridge to rise up towards the surface of the Atlantic ocean. A significant quake along this fault is more than capable of causing lots of damage from shaking and could produce a set of Tsunami waves that would affect the entire north and northeast coasts within minutes (10 - 20 minutes).

In the middle of the island is a smaller subduction zone and patchwork of lessor transform faults.

South of the island another large under sea subduction zone known as the Meurtos Fault. .

Two significant inland transform faults are of prime concern. In the north, the Septentrional fault runs the length of the island from east to west and the south/central Enriquillo fault running west to east all the way through Haiti and ending east of lake Enriquillo.

Generally speaking the risk of a significant earthquake in the DR is defined as being of medium risk from day to day with a significant earthquake due anytime within the next 40 years.

All of the faults are capable of producing shaking that could result in massive amounts of damage to buildings and infrastructure locally and potentially island wide. The general trend over the past 70 or so years has been to see infrequent major quakes in the magnitude of 6.4 to 7.0. I believe the most recent was a 6.4 in 2003 centred inland near Puerto Plata.

Between the big shakes are almost daily smaller tremors scattered along the various fault lines. Some noticeable and others not (magnitudes less than 3 normally with an occasional 3.? now and then). The island of Hispaniola is in a very active seismic area and it is only a matter of time until a jolt occurs that everyone will be immediately aware of.

Based on the confluence of the potential forces from the various faults the North Coast From Haiti all the way to Punta Cana is at a higher potential risk than anywhere else, being sandwiches between two contiguous major faults. An imaginary line running east to west through Santiago being 2nd and the south coast coming in 3rd.

However, while the risk factors for a large earthquake in a given location vary statically with respect to probability, the next big one could still occur anywhere at anytime.

The only place 'north' where you can stand would be the large Silver Bank and the smaller Navidad bank, but those are about 70 miles out. Unless you are talking about an offshore reef, there are no submerged mountains where you can stand. This would be a huge navigational hazard and would have taken many ships down already. If you have any detailed information on this, I would be interested in its exact location.

Imagine if an earthquake that size hit off the coast here somewhere. That is why I push my son in the capital (and I practice what I preach here in Santiago) to keep extra botollones de agua, canned foods and batteries in the house. You never know when those items will be needed. Living in Florida for a number of years and seeing how store shelves clear out over the "threat" of a hurricane is enough to show that, after the fact, is oft times too late.

That's why I subscribe to alert lists and post some of them here - to remind people that the unexpected does happen, If we are lucky enough to get any warning at all, it won't provide much time and we need to already have a plan of where to go and what to do.

The first of several tsunami waves if generated by a quake along any of the ocean faults north or south of the DR as well as a big quake somewhere in the Puerto Rico zone (which is very active this year) will likely arrive in the DR within 10 - 20 minutes. Multiple waves could continue to arrive for a few hours.

If you don't get any warning, know the fastest way to the highest ground around and act right away, you could be swimming like everyone else who lives along the coast.

Luckily, the people of the DR are not as prone to "panic buying" as those in Florida. When we had two hurricane threats last year, the supermarkets remained well stocked.

Luckily, the people of the DR are not as prone to "panic buying" as those in Florida. When we had two hurricane threats last year, the supermarkets remained well stocked.

In Florida I think the media gets kick backs from the supermarkets and Home Depot. The media hype sends people in a frenzy. One hurricane 3 which was passing by caused my neighbors to one by one put up their shutters. I finally had to succumb or look like the dick on the block. I put up the 23 dam shutters only to spend the afternoon out front having drinks and throwing the football with the neighbors (there wasn't enough breeze for the kids to fly a kite).
Having said this I did make sure we were prepared if something did happen including a plan on where to go in the event of a disaster. There is a big difference between Florida Hurricanes (plenty of warning) and California (or anywhere else, but I lived in Ca) earthquakes - no warning. I'll take the hurricanes given the choice.
