Best Places to Live in DR

Punta Cana for me .... after living in SDQ for 3 years.. I don't why I didn't move here sooner. If you don't need to work in SDQ I don't know why anyone would want to live in SDQ.

I shall be down to earth, i love my small campo in the middle of nowhere, in the center of platanos, coffee, papaya, cacao plantations also surrended by cows , horses, 50km from SFM. No stress, no gringos, only locals full of bachata, marengue salsa reguetton, nice chicks, local beer and lovely people to live with.

Worth an explanation.

I would be hard pushed to describe Punta Cana as the best of DR.

A flat land beach based compromise perhaps. It ain't real DR for me. And so far away.

So Far away its only 1hr and 40minutes to the capital plus its a beautiful ride.Hard push in your world maybe i agree its not for everyone but its definitely for me . I did my time in the capital no more.... and yes it's all a matter of choice

I guess you refer to the road and not the surrounding scenery.

I accept that there are many that settle for what is comfortable for them and glad you have found your piece of DR that suits you. But I am sure there are some readers who want to hear about places that are outside the well trodden box and also represent the best of DR in other ways.

Now living in the campo away from the cities with cacao, coffee, papaya and other tropical goodies all around, away from expats and really immersing oneself in unadulterated Dominican life as post #82 sounds much more idyllic and a very best of DR to me.

For me I take safety, security, and convenience over coffee beans and papaya any day. To each his own.........

There is much more to DR than the capital and the East Coast thankfully.

Lets move on and get for readers a wider community perspective of possible best places in DR to live with pros and cons, roosters and all.

We paid US$50,000 for a large (very large) house - 2 living rooms, 2 baths, 3 beds, kitchen, utility, study, cellar and dog room lol plus wrap around balcony and 9 tareas. Near Moncion.

As a non big city person I hate Santo Domingo. I even hate going there for the several reasons the government has that can only be done by going there. It is not just the horrible traffic. If someone paid me just to live in Santo Domingo and not have to do any work, I would not take them up on it.

I have visited Las Terrenas. Too many French people there. Visited Samana once and were supposed to spend the night. Samana, for some reason, creeped out my wife so much we drove home. We have visited Jarabacoa many times to visit family members. It is OK, but neither of us would want to live there despite my wife being born there.

We live in Cabarete and have for 14 years since I moved to the DR.

Agreed on the French in Las Terrenos - I wonder if they count their annual savings in not wearing clean shirts, bathing or using deodorant. No offense French folks but hygiene should not stop just because you are in a laid back setting.
I liked Jarrabacoa but think I would find it a bit boring there to live. Santo Domingo is to big, too congested and the nightlife is good if you have the money to go out frequently because it is not cheap.
Of course any where in the DR is not cheap - I would say it costs double to live in DR compared to a majority of places in the US

Unfortunately leaving the capitol does not mean the trash or thieves are left behind ?
Why is it the populace can not learn not to discard trash wherever they wish ? And then they wonder where the cucarachas come from.
Baffles me.........

Where do you live that you find that. Bought a car? Bought gasoline? Paid an electric bill? Gone to the supermarket?
Yes if you life in a zinc covered house with one light and a small fan where the electricity goes out everyday then it's cheap otherwise it is not

Not that bad....
gas, cars are rich...really rich but Cdns are closer to this gas pricing... $1.30/L x 4L /gal = $5.20CAD

Gas in parts of the US is $2.40. Eating local sure but things like cereal or your favorite adult beverage (Canadian Club) is much higher
