Prostitution is not illegal. A one on one interaction between a John and a Hooker is allowed.

Having a brothel that promotes prostitution is illegal and so is pimping. Does that help to explain why such businesses are frequently shut down? Not a good business model since they can be "shown" to be against the law of promotion of prostitution.

No doubt that they were illegal, but they were overlooked for decades. It was just a typical knee-jerk reaction to pacify all the do-gooders and show that they were doing something. Meanwhile, Sosua and Boca Chica are no different than they ever were, in fact, worse.

We go to Boca Chica a lot. No/minimal issue during the day. No knowledge of what happens at night.

I have never met a Dominican that has that opinion. You certainly have met people that are not the norm for Dominicans.

Big, it is not just the "gringos" who want the stigma of Sosua (and Boca Chica) to be cleaned up, far more importantly it is the DR Government that finds sex tourism to be undesirable. I have been following this for 16 years. The government may never find a way to do this with history as my guide.

I did not do an official poll, however I believe the DR govt is indifferent on the matter and only make public displays here and there to appease small groups. The island is covered with cabana's and they are for one thing only. The town of Sosua for all intents and purposes is mostly cabana's.

These places were never the problem. It's not where a typical family tourist is going to be strolling by. The problem always has been all the chicas in the streets of places like Sosua and Boca Chica that were giving the DR a black eye.

That place looks no different than many of the strip clubs in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or any other city.

Since the name is in English I have had a dozen folks, over the years, while sitting in San Jorge Pizza ask me how to translate " Lust After Work." . I assume that most just want my comment on it. It is a modern building across the street from the pizza joint.

You happen to be very, very wrong on the DR governments view of the matter in Santo Domingo. The DR government hates the reputation that prostitution in Sosua and Boca Chica gives the DR. Doubly so with social media adding its flair to that hooker party.

As I mentioned , I have been following this in the news for years and there are many posts , even on DR1 , with the DR government's opinions via the Attorney General of the DR. At one time, they considered arresting Johns, which I always thought would cut the problem right down to a minimal one in nothing flat.

NOTE: This is not at all about prostitution among and between Dominicans which is far more discreet. The Cabanas aren't going anywhere. If you focus on them, you miss the point entirely.

I believe you just provided the answer contrary to your own thought process, and intended direction.
Indeed, for all intents and purposes, Sosua is viewed by some as one giant cabaña, and this is exactly what higher ups within government desire to cleanse. This viewed perception.

Although I am not much the fan of Boca Chica, I have to concur with your statement. To hear some tell the tale, the place is deader than a cemetery. This is obviously not the case. What is missing is the hordes of perverts, or the so called monger community that afflicted it for so long. Good riddance. The place is actually tolerable now, to a degree.

What did Boca Chica do to get rid of the mongers? Use RidX?

I can not say with pure certainty. I do not visit the town enough to give a detailed commentary. My observations are solely based on the occasional visit for lunch or dinner with associates. Perhaps a resident or regular visitor could provide a clearer annotation.

Nope, If the government wanted it closed they could do it in 6 weeks. The airport would be hit too hard form the cancelled flights from no more single men. Restaurants, hotels, taxis etc would fold. The few and far between families cannot prop up Sosua's economy. Of course the politicians are going to say they don't like it publicly, but actions speak volumes and nothing has been or will be done for a decade. Case in point, that gentleman Cassiti is back in town. P.S prostitution is not illegal nor is being a jon

I believe you referenced jons "perverts" why the anger? What does that say about the woman? Is everyone who uses a cabana a pervert? I am guessing you are not involved in business here.

Sorry, but this notion is a complete fallacy.
It has already been discussed how the economy would, and can handle such a situation, in time of course.
Nobody, especially me, is interfering with your desire to live your life as you see fit, but I am only saying that in the future you may have to pursue alternative locales for the adventures you seek.

No anger, solely a lifetime observation. What two consenting adults do in their own time is their own business.
As well, native peoples wanting to recover their homeland from undesirables for their proper enjoyment should not be hindered in this pursuit.
It is foolish to say that all persons who utilize cabañas are perverts, just the same as those who utilize Motel 6's, Days Inn Expresses, and Red Roof Inns are not either. I know of many people who use these places for quick rest overs and/or showers while in transit. They are very affordable options. You should be keen to the fact that many couples utilize the services of the cabañas for yes, private time amongst consenting adults, but not all these interludes are pay for play.
Lastly, yes I do have some business investments here within RD, just not in Sosua or Cabarete…...yet.

It's difficult to imagine the difference one person's agenda can make to so many other peoples lives.

Sosua, when I moved over here about 9 years ago was a flourishing caribbean town full of character, fun music and life. There was music all around, tourists and locals thronging the street, tables overflowing on the sidewalks, traders passing by with everything from chinese toys,'genuine' Rolexes to knock-off Viagra or bananas.
Beach bars were full, diving and excursions were booming and restaurants had enough trade to live off.Money was rolling in.
Apartments were tricky to get at a good rate and hotels turning over nicely.

The ladies of the night and their conquests were great to people watch and rarely bothered non-punters.Kids would do bike tricks for a few pesos, puppet man would make his magic. It was a great place to hang out till early morn.

For those who wished, reasonably priced nightclubs were within a few minutes walk, pica pollo ,Olly Pork or empanadas right on the street and a passing parade of fun and laughter.A couple of 24Hr places catered to the insomniacs and alkies.

Compare that to the morose and miserable shadow of its former self which it has since become.

As the wonderful Sosua committee has recently stated,it's fine if many places go out of business. An acceptable sacrifice to the sanitising plan. The irony that arresting chicas for no legal reason is illegal in itself seems to be lost on those up on high.

The saying "you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs" assumes that,

a)Somebody wants omelettes,
b)You have a kitchen that works
c)You have a plan
d)You know how to cook,or know somebody who can.

I remain unconvinced.............

But as many of us are non-voting guests here it's for sure not up to us.

If you actually believe cabanas are only used for prostitution, you are woefully unfamiliar with Dominican culture.

What % of the Sosua economy do you think is from mongers?

We use cabanas regularly instead of hotels when we travel, especially to StoDgo. No lobby for check in. Car parked in a secure garage and we don't have to take everything out of it. Big room, clean, a/c pumping on high. US$17 a night. We even have what we call our Cabana Bag with sheets, pillows, blanket, towels, toiletries, complete coffee maker and service, and multi-port charger. We can go on a moment's notice, throw the duffel in the car and scoot...

Did that two days ago for an appointment at the US Embassy. Like taking a trip from NY to CA and back within 24 hours, but need a place to sleep that is cheap. Do that whenever we go to Santo Domingo to minimize time and cost. Now back to the future of Sosua. For me it will become a more expat related community. The tourism days are behind us and those Pedro Clisante tourists are going to be whatever they will be in the future, but likely less of a factor over time.
