It is true that as an American, I never heard of Thomas Cook until I moved to the DR. Why would I have heard of them?

I am sorry to see they failed. Less competition is not a good thing for the consumer.

Go Yankees!

Thomas Cook was also known in the States but not as a travel agency but by their guaranteed cheques.
Must have paid with hundreds of their cheques on my travels and they were always accepted anywhere I went especially in the States. ;)

I believe the impact on tourist traffic to the DR will be negligible, just very short term impact. The competition in travel is fierce and others will soon pick up the business left by Thomas Cook. What really impacted the number of tourists this year is the bad news coverage from Punta Cana, discussed in another thread.

And yeah, World Series no way

However, the winners of the World Series aren’t in any way world champions as this title is reserved for the winners of the World Baseball Classic, which is an international tournament started in 2006. The winning teams of the competitions so far are as follows:

2006 - Japan
2009 - Japan
2013 - Dominican Republic

The World Series may only be a North American event but there is no doubt that it is the world’s premier baseball event. Whilst it may not feature teams from across the globe, it does feature many international players. For these reasons, some can justify the World Series as its name.

It's only the largest travel company IN THE WORLD. As an American of course you would never of heard of them.

Your world extends to the borders of your contiguous country, just like your World Series.

….bunch of b.s.….Now I know why in 1776 we sent your countrymen back to your island...…...

I heard 1027 Brits are presently stranded in the DR. Flights are being put on so they should be getting home OK. The reasons for TC going bust are many but the fundamental is their business plan is outdated and they failed to modernize. Should have closed highstreet branches 10 years ago. Like many businesses that thrived before have been killed by Internet and this is a classic example. Brexit is a minor cause of its fold as its been dragging 2 billion £ debt since merging a while back. No one in England are saying it’s because of Brexit.

The UK government is running an urgent investigation into what went wrong, and whether it was justified for the directors to pay themselves bonuses and salaries of £20M in the last few years, despite the business struggling. Seems like they had the wrong people running the business. No Brits are actually "stranded". The government has chartered planes to bring everyone home, the media are desperately trying to find someone who is stranded somewhere but have only managed so far to find a few people who were flown home to a different airport and had to be put on a bus to where they came from.

There are actually many people stranded in the DR just go to Punta Cana Airport where there are hundreds of people sleeping on the floors. I heard TUI holidays are also affected that use Thompson planes.

I worked for Thomas Cook in Boston years ago. From the innovative visionaryThomas Cook who died in 1892 to this mess is a long road.

Keep us updated on the status of the people in stranded in the DR.

I came back to the DR from London Gatwick on Sunday, fortunately with British Airways. The impending demise of Thomas Cook was in the British newspapers last week, but I was surprised to see passengers boarding Thomas Cook planes at Gatwick on Sunday. They must have been aware of the likelihood of there being no Thomas Cook plane to bring them back. Maybe they were hoping to get an extended holiday at someone else's expense!

Yet I'm on a forum to expand knowledge. Get off your high horse theres no Thomas cook commercials and if I want to do a travel package I do it on my own or the local triple A.

Thomas Cook commercials are common, at least in other parts of the world. It is a well known travel agency. We ourselves use various agencies and also do our own packages. Here in the DR we uses several local agencies, and Dumbo travel in Santo Domingo but best service by far that we've had locally is Michelle at https://www.facebook.com/Solymar-Travel-763582803845027/
