Everything horribly sweet aroma

I really hope someone can give hope: every single non food latino product that I buy here has a sickening perfume (not good). Tissues, paper towels, toilet paper, something my mechanic stuck in my car which now smells like a fkn bathroom deodorizer. Bought boxes of tissues, Kleenex at Nacional. Thought wrongly they might have been regular like in the US. Of course I should have known better even looking at bottom of box which said KleenexLatin America, or something like that. Went to use it after a sneeze and thought I’d barf from that awful smell. I went to farmacia and thought I would try there.. they showed me tissues stating “sin aroma”. No
No. Can someone give answer other than needing to bring Everything with me from home? Charmin toilet paper only product I have seen with no aroma. How the hell can you use these products with a cold or if you are easily nauseated. Unless dominicans have built in anti aroma gene. My car is unbearable to be in because of the smell, you know like being in a livery car in Us where I always assumed it was to cover smell of weed. So does anyone recommend products with no smell that is available?

Six weeks into my first visit to DR, I am puzzled by this question! I have seen reference elsewhere to perfumed bathroom tissue and assumed we had just "lucked out" because the Lider brand we purchased at the Jumbo has no fragrance. Also the little packs of Kleenex brand "original" tissues, manufactured in Colombia by Kimberly-Clark are not perfumed.

Beginner's luck??!

Most Dominican bathrooms, be them in a
residence or commercial establishment, do
not want you flushing paper products. They
are almost always tossed in a can sitting next
to the toilet. My opinion, explains why so many
are scented as I do not want smell your sh*t anymore

That's the only brand we use, beats others in price and quality. And definitely not perfumed. We used Scott before POP had Jumbo, but Scott is almost double the price...

Some older places and establishment have crappy plumbing 2.5-3” plumbing clogs easy...last 20yrs everything is properly sized here..

Post # 6 explains it best. In past years people did not flush toilet paper because the systems could not handle it. In some areas they still use the waste basket next to the toilet for the paper. That is why mostly the scented paper is sold.
I am not sure where in the DR you live. Maybe you could ask the stores you shop at to stock some unscented products.

Correct answer? This is not an exam. I asked What is the perfume smell? And there was no answer but there are lits of snide comments. So if you can speak clearly maybe I can understand. Otherwise we can just call this a passing moment.

In the compo this is also due to the septic systems here as they have no leach beds they have a block lined hole in the ground that slowly leaches into the surrounding area. flushing anything besides waste would fill them too quick. Normally they dont run grey water from dishwashing and laundry into the septic's let alone paper. the old paper they used to use did not break down as does the modern stuff

Lots of the older buildings still standing and when they were modernized they did not usually change the below ground plumbing so you still have a lot of those 2 and 3 inch drainage pipes even in santiago and santo domingo. or they are still not hooked up to the city septic system suggest looking at the area by the santo domingo zoo for starters, or the area next to the river!

Exactly. Except in our campo, the septic system isn’t block lined, it’s literally just a big deep hole, with a cement covering. We have 2 bathrooms, the original from early 80s has small pipes (we weren’t here when it was done), but when we built our master suite the one thing Mr AE was adamant about was proper plumbing so we could flush paper.

Every public restroom I’ve used in DR always has that dreaded garbage pail next to the toilet. I presume it’s because some of the patrons are so accustomed to using the pail, even though the restaurant or hotel restrooms can accept paper. They’d probably throw it on the floor if the pail was missing.

So, yeah, I understand the scented paper.

Kleenex at LaSarina by KC made in El Salvidor has no noticeable aroma ....I have serious alergies to perfume aroma of all kinds.
So I understand your quest.
The septic systems here amaze me, but thanks to this thread some answers have come forth.
My system was built 12 years ago with the house. I bought it from the Developer. Never had a problem with the septic...never had it pumped...not sure of design and am not going to dig it out to investigate ''let dead dogs lie''.
If I expand beyond the 5 bathrooms I shall then dig things up and install a larger capacity septic system; that takes the tissue.
However experience in these matters causes me to look for the ''single ply'' toilet tissue since they bio degrade in the leach bed type of septic system ...... In Nova Scotia such tissue is recommended for septic systems...but not by law just common sense. I guess!
However I do think the kitchen waste water drains into the septic...that I can correct.
At times I put a natural bacteria into the septic , Brown sugar/dry yeast mix (Look up on DIY on internet)...other than that it is Septo-bac from the hardware store in Canada.
On occasion after adding the bacteria to the septic there is a slight odor from the vent pipe which is 8ft tall and camoflaged by the surrounding trees and vegetation.
My biggest challenge here with perfume is avoiding the crowds dressed to the 'nines' ....mucho odor.

had a friend that worked the NYC-SD and back flight for AA. He claimed that they usually closed off one of the bathrooms for use by the flight crew. This was because of the passengers would throw the used paper on the floor as there was not trash can for them to put it in. May have changed by now this was about 10 years ago and I don't fly that route
