I would wait until this week is over to buy ticket politics in play , just incase new prez has some wild ideas of his own ..
August 16 is then the date until which you would have to wait when Abinader and his party completely take over all aspects of the central government.
I expect apathy of from government workers who will all be replaced at that time until then.

so people without a smart phone are out of luck. In my case I have neither a QR scanner or a web browser installed on my phone. I guess going out for a meal is going to entail work from now on.

So when you sit down what do you use to read the menu?
I would be SOL since I have no "cellular". I love the pic of the old PC.. :D in response to your question.

Will the need for hand held technology force me eventually to purchase a smart phone? I sure hope not.

Would it not be easy to look at the menu on your home computer before you depart to the location? Jot the items down on a piece of paper before you leave. It seems the establishment is trying to appease the Doomsday Davies and Crazy Charlottes who believe they can catch The Kung Flu from touching objects. Menus included.
If the establishment was truly forward thinking in appeasing the crazies, they would laminate their menus, and spritz them after each and every use by a customer.

The whole touching thing is ridiculous .
first thing you do when you sit down is to grab the Chair arm rest to move your seat in .. Do you really think they sprayed those chairs . and how is that different from a Menu.
I agree, Laminate the Menus and then pretend to spray them down and wipe them in between every customer .

Establishments are clearly in a no win situation with some types. Even if they were to use one time use paper menus, persons would complain that they are not a green establishment, and should recycle.

If a restaurant keeps an accurate menu online and communicates effectively how to find it, I have no problem with that. Just that my experience with establishments keeping their online info updated and accurate has been less than stellar a lot of the time and it's often not easy or straight forward finding the info you are looking for. Website design and functionality in the DR leaves a lot to be desired.

Thats not a bad idea though... All Chinese restaurants have a pile of take out Menus on the counter .

Let the customers keep their Menu.... and when they take it with them .. they may even pass it along , and the restaurant gets even more business.
Sounds like more than a Good Investment on their part .

The establishment is not trying to "appease" anyone. The "no physical menu" directive is by order of the municipality of Sosua and if you are a restaurant operating in El Batey, non compliance will get you shut down and/or required to pay a "fine" very quickly.

Now if you want "el plato del dia" in Los Charamicos or Maranatha, go ahead and enjoy your arroz, habichuelas con carne, ordered from an old paper menu.

The no-win situation is that corruption hasn't skipped a beat. Restaurant owners now have another extortion tax to be randomly paid to the Policia Nacional, CESTUR, and recently elected municipal government "inspectors" who are making up for lost time (revenue) as we speak.

Sorry to contradict your narrative of "appeasing the crazies", but the reality is those "crazies" you refer to ad nauseum, have nothing to do with either the requirement of no physical menus nor the collection of the "fines" imposed for non compliance. It is just business as usual down here in Shangri-La.

Thank you for your contribution, information, and clarification on the matter.
It seems some previous posters were also unaware of this situation, as only one particular restaurant was previously mentioned.

Of course. Looking at a menu on my home computer would be exactly what I would do, given that it would be my only option in this case.

My wife and I laughed out loud at the chicas/meals/ Western Union joke.
