BOCA CHICA or Juan Dolio - The capital

Juan Dolio is the equivalent to watching paint dry. Peaceful but extremely boring. Boca Chica is lively but keep your wits. Everyone is hustling there. Expect to be approached every 10 secs with someone hawking something.

It is equivalent to watching vegetables grow. Like in Minnesota.

The trick is to acknowledge them without speaking to them. A subtle headshake "no" and they usually won't bother you again.

Speak, and you've initiated a negotiating conversation.
That doesn't work in Boca chica. There have been times when I was eating dinner at the bocana restaurant and a guy will just literally put cigars or something in my face. I've said this about El conde and Boca Chica if they got rid of all the hustlers those places would make five times more money from tourists.

And don't go Monday through Thursday you'll literally go insane. One guy said that it's not boring for him since he's sweating on top of his girlfriend. I get it but you can only do that so much. Then you're back to the extreme boredom again.

Its a delicate balance ignoring them without dissing them to much and avoiding appearing arrogant and rude. Smile and move on. I am still practicing the right technique.

As a person who lived in Boca Chica for many years, I would have to disagree with you. I am speaking of my past experience there. If a headshake doesn't get rid of them, a direct stare and a "NO" always did. And as Garyexpat mentioned, a finger wag doesn't hurt either.

The hustlers can pretty much identify their easy "marks".
It's not an exact science, but rather history just repeating itself.

Any suggestions on which may be a better option for an overnight stay? I was looking to book a hotel to stay at for one night as I'm landing in Punta cana , but heading to Santiago, with the curfew and time of arrival , no way I make it? After reading post about movie people getting shot at in jaun dolio and the mentioned increase in crime and etc in boca chica? I was just wondering is there anywhere "relatively" safe , we all know the world is not a safe place. Or would I be better off staying in the capital ? Open to suggestions as its a one night stay and just seeing which would be a better area ? No hotel references need. Thanks to all. in case someone tries to mention Frio Hot . lol

In keeping with your OP, and responding to it in kind, two words.......
Juan Dolio.

Agreed. I say no in Dominican - ese. I just wave my index finger back and forth and . . .

LMAO about this. SOOOO true. I now refer to this as the "windshield wiper no". It's used in a number of ways when you acquire the motion along with the facial expression at the same time. Very fast=that's a quick no. Slow= not on my diet. Midium with a smile= OH you devil you!

In Las Terrenas I walk a lot and there is hardly any of that. Often don’t bring my phone which is healthy for the mind to. Another option is to just stay in car and not go out and walk these places. I agree with Andre. It can get bad in some parts with hustlers coming up while you are sitting down. I am certainly not among the hard core crowd here who can just always toughen it out.

You could also stay at the Sheraton Four Points at PUJ, and wait until the morning to travel to Santiago. Expreso Bavaro runs every two hours to the capital from Veron, beginning at 7am.
Great breakfast buffet. Is the hotel open now and do they still have breakfast as a buffet ?

Cabarete
I quite often have to spend a night in that area and would definitely choose Juan Dolio over Boca Chica and do so. However, when I have come back from Punta Cana I have stayed at Bayahibe, which is nicer/cleaner/more interesting than either.

:sneaky:Thanks to all , but as Tom Seleck says " This is not my first rodeo " lol . But thank you all for the advice and suggestions tips and etc. I'm not appraochable , I'm not the smiling type . arrogance is a gift and a cure ;)😁. But the point was a place to rest my head and be gone by the crack of dawn . Food ,comfortable place to stay , shower, movie till i see the back of my eyelids. Out in the morning. Plus with the curfew in place , even with the change , all places willbe pretty much quiet .

We think alike. My favorite time to drive is in the early morning. Least amount of madness.

Totally agree, I had the same experience in Bocana. You pay to get hassled, no thanks. Juan Dolio is a cleaner better place.

Bocana should really offer some sort of security shield for their customers.
Their owner was advised of this long ago.

Absolutely, it is such a beautiful place and setting but you cannot enjoy a meal or a drink near the water. I hope the owner reconsiders the advice.

I regularly eat in many restaurants in BC for many years. Bocamarina. El Neptuno. El Pelicano, etc. And this has NEVER happened to me! NEVER! EVER!
