At the beginning of this pandemic there was a run on toilet paper.

Now there appears to be a run on "bread" and "cup-of soup" at least at Pola (La Sirena) in Santiago.
Shelves are pretty much empty of those two items.

Yesterday, Saturday, January 1st, the parking lots were full.
The supermercado's are opening at 6am..

Please.

Everybody reading this who has a lick of sense to them, which may be a stretch in some cases, knows full well that I am referring to immigrants. expats from North America and Europe primarily . Probably because I said immigrants in my post.

Your attempt to turn this into some sort of attack on Dominicans is beyond ridiculous and inaccurate. pathetic, but hardly surprising.

Sorry, you don't get to change the topic because you feel like it. This is about deeply irresponsible, short-sighted expats, who want to put others at risk so they can feel comfortable. and being willing to put others in harm's way for one's own benefit is just deplorable.

You really don't have a clue of what you're talking about. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Anyen.

This is when I wish I were a citizen. I would love to be able to tell the government how stupid this is. But as a visitor, I just have to STFU. It's not my place to address the government.
This is a very interesting point that you have made. It has been a torn in my side for hundreds of ex pats posts that when it all comes down to the brass tacks of the matter...this is NOT your country and there is nothing you may do other than accept or gripe.Accept or decline. It is a wonderful way, (seriously) to learn humility. Newbies don't get it. Talking about "oh, when I lived in ..." is BS. Meaningless. So, IF you accept you need of course to acclimate to the situation and way of life. I can talk about this subject all day long because to me it's the difference of living the good life here or always being frustrated.

Rob it's best you quit digging. You're over your head already, and the concrete truck is backing up with chute down.

Since I know that many will "have" the virus, just like many get gripe, I prefer to ask how many people that they personally know who have died from it, so far 3 people claim to know someone that has died from it. Since I ask 2-4 people per day for the last 2 months I'd say that is a very small %.
0.6% is the best estimate so far for actual death rate from those having CV-19. My estimate was 0.5% (1 in 200 or 5 out of 1,000) made shortly after the virus was discovered and the CDC In the US came out with 0.6% (6 out of 1,000) a few months back.

A few friends of mine know people that died from CV-19 back in the US.

Keep in mind that CV-19 is here, there and everywhere to stay no matter how well the vaccines work.
It remains to be seen how the governments react to this reality over time.

DRob...I guess I am one of those gringos who did not plan to 18 months of a combination of a depressed market and no work at all (9months). I am surprised I made it this far. So, my offer goes out to you. My house is going up for sale on Tuesday...really no other choice. It will be priced well below what I paid for it and well below what other listings are offering. Here is your chance to move down and experience day to day life in the country. I will also through in a car and a motorcycle. Sound like a deal? You can message me. I won't be far from my laptop, with a 12pm curfew on a beautiful sunny day.

That is a most unfortunate situation. It is one of the reasons I mention to people they should not plan to move and live here unless they are retired or have a job they can do on line. Of course even those on line jobs can dry up.

What type of work fell apart for you and was it because of restrictions here over CV19?

Selling the car and the motorcycle isn't enough to keep you going? What do you have?

I own a tour company. It is definitely Covid related. I am certainly not the only casualty.

You obviously believe the numbers. I do not. I think that there is a big difference between someone who dies "from" the virus as opposed to those that die "with" the virus. I would like to see deaths from Influenza for each year 2015 - 2020. plus other ailments like heart disease etc.

Janet's was packed again today. My neighbor had to wait almost an hour to check out. I'm sure many other supermarkets were the same.

Of course, when you force the total population to finish shopping by 12 or 11:30 assuming they close with at least enough time for employees to get home you create a kind of hysteria which results in long lines. I just wanted a bag of ice for my cooler and gave up after long lines at 3 different places.

You're in Caberette? Janet's is our go-to for those hard to find back home items.
Were they practising social distancing? Were they also wearing masks?

Actually, the thread line has to do with the newer curfew restrictions within RD.
YOU are the person attempting to change, and derail it with your ridiculous Op-ed piece.
Off Topic does not exist any longer.

Could you not get a bag of ice from any colmado?

I am up in Sosua for at least a few days. I tried Super Super, the little market by hotel coco and the other in front of Infinite Blue, then threw in the towel. I have access to cold beers where I am staying so I'll live.
