Okay, things are fine there. Well, as good as it can be considering there is a TS. She has a lot of flooding in her neighborhood and therefore in her house. She hasn't had power since yesterday late afternoon. The inversor ran out of battery long ago. There are trees down. Pretty typical. I don't live too far from there so it's pretty much the same as it is here. Nothing threatening. My boyfriend also works close to Herrera and he reports that things are the same as they are here. It's probably best to call your family anyway.......but I am sure things are fine.

I am going to head out in a few minutes. I am going to watch the sea from the clubhouse of my building before planning more lessons for my students and watching novellas. I hope the generator stays on! I hate to think what that bill is going to be like!

Great, thanks for that.

I take it you teach then? - what do you teach?

I probably should mention that this colleague does not live in a poor area.......I am not sure where your family is, but that makes a difference. I mean it's not the best where she lives, but it's not considered poor. It is a barrio, but just not bajo mundo.

Sounds like its probably a similar area to our family then - we'll definitely be calling tonight, the question is always whether or not we can get through ;)

3rd graders in a bilingual school. Very happy 3rd graders with no school today! I teach Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies in English. I love my job. It is not easy.....certainly a lot of work, but I love it. I would love it even more if I made more money! :)

What do you do?

Sounds great! Where are you from originally then? Where did you do your training?

I work for an Estate Agent in York, UK as a Sales Progressor, dealing with developers, investors and solicitors mainly - would much prefer it though if it was over there (we'll get there one day!)

U.S. New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island. I have been teaching for about 6 years. I went to a university in NJ for my masters. The best training is on the job experience though---especially here. I have learned more teaching here than I did in the states. Mainly because parenting is so different and there is the whole second language thing. I could go on and on and on about this, but alas, this is a tropical storm thread. PM me if you want!!!

Went over to Guyacanes again long time since I've seen the sea as rough as today, worse than in the morning heavy rain again as well I thought it was over in the morning but it doesn't look like it.

Thanks for asking. The rain has abated a bit and we have LESS wind but it's still very windy. I no longer expect the wicked witch of the W to go flying by on a broom. I kind of like the more exciting weather (I've had my share between tornados, hurricanes, mudslides, hail storms with hail as big baseballs, fires, storm surge, earthquakes, floods isolating our city for a week, but by far for me the worst is fire so I feel sorry for those in CA.

Our power has been up and down all day. If I go silent it's because of that but otherwise I'm available for questions (I was supposed to be staffing the clinic in Ramon Santana but the mud road would have been a disaster.)

I'd love to know the answer to your ? but it's all speculation at this point (although Rocky has been known to nail this exactly if I'm not mistaken and he said not until Tues evening.)

I want to know because I have surgery scheduled on WED, 31st of Oct in the Cap.

The sat pix look like Rocky is right. This storm is moving VERY slowly and because JD/Boca Chica and SD are right off the Caribbean, as long as there are swirls out there, we'll be getting some action. If I were scheduled to fly in, I'd wait till later in Nov or Dec to come (but that is me--knowing it's rainy season.) There's lots to see and do even in the rain, but if you want sun, that's my advice.

Diario Libre is criticising the Met. Office for not providing enough warning, but my impression is that this was not forecast by international meteorologists either, so the DR weather people should not be singled out, or anyone for that matter, because of the way the storm developed. Do the weather pundits agree?

I ain't no pundit and I don't know how well weathermen can forecast with accuracy, but it certainly was clear to me a couple of day ago that some bad weather was coming our way.
I always watch that weather site with the Sat pix, knowing that what's to the East of us is coming our way, and that storm's been visible to the East of us for days.

Yahoo article accuracy?

Here is a sad note just posted on Yahoo news. At least 12 dead in DR due to flooding:

Dozen dead as tropical storm drenches Hispaniola - Yahoo! News

I am sure it will get worse. Here on the north coast (cabarete) lots of rain and mild winds.

Hey thnx for link. Did anyone else notice that the sat pic they put in this didn't even include the DR/Haiti--just Cuba and the US??

Another thing...all you N coasters...Yahoo states "the mountain community of Caberete..." K lo K? I've been there and it's on the beach. Do you guys consider it a mountain community? Is there another town with a close name other than the famous surf community near Puerta Plata?

I agree that the criticism is unfair. I think it caught every one off guard. There are few storms that develop so fas as this one did.

But given the vulnerability of many areas to storms, probably the point made is that one needs to be on top of them to check for when one will go from depression to storm and then give out the warning and have the channels so that the message goes out through all the television stations as a warning.

I recall watching in US TV a ticker that was put on shows to announce that a tornado could be in the making.

I think they were talking about a town in Haiti (Cabaret) not Cabarete DR, which is indeed on the north coast and on the beach. Again here just lots of rain and light wind.
