U.S. raises travel alert to Dominican Republic due to covid and crime....​

In September last year, the alert was lowered to level two.​

The United States Department of State increased the alert for travel to the Dominican Republic, increasing it to level four due to the “incidence of the coronavirus and citizen insecurity.”
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued a level 4 travel health advisory level, due to a very high level of covid-19 in the country,” indicates a statement from the entity.
In addition, they indicate to their US citizens to be careful when visiting the Dominican Republic due to the recorded crime.
A description that they identify as a “summary of the country” indicates that violent crimes, including armed robberies, homicides, and sexual assaults, are a cause for concern in the Dominican territory.
They also cite that “the wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system all contribute to the high level of crime on a broader scale.”
The detail is that the non-urban areas of the country do not have security and that the city, thanks to “a professional tourist police force, a 911 system in many parts of the country, and a concentration of resources in tourist areas,” tend to be better guarded.
They recommended their citizens “to be careful in the environment once they attend the country, not to physically resist any robbery attempt, not to show signs of wealth such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.”
Likewise, “follow the advice of tour operators and the resort regarding local security and safety concerns.”
Last alert
In September last year, the department declined to two alert levels for the Dominican Republic and eliminated the recommendation to its citizens to “reconsider travel” to the country.
This alert level is considered moderate and implies that travelers must “exercise greater caution” in relation to the health situation once they enter the country

I understand their statement about crime and it is definitely warranted/ something tourist need to be aware of when traveling down here however their advice about Covid is garbage.

Crime needs to be taken seriously especially if you're coming from one of these kumbaya countries like Denmark where you're more likely to catch frostbite than two in the face during an armed robbery.

Rarely will you be involved in crime here if you stick with the resort plan or otherwise keep your nose clean. Its the gringos that think their command of the language and culture is superior and they "know how to operate". These are the ones who misfortune tends to fall upon

As with most developing countries once you venture out of the touristy areas with your pink backpack, camera and flipflops... you become prey. Street smarts is a must along with a little common sense if you want to avoid being a victim of a robbery or worse.
Example of street crime:
I kid you not, a banca located at the same intersection as the police station at Calle Del Sol and Sabana Larga here in Santiago was robbed at gun point in broad daylight just a few weeks ago. No arrest were made. Different type of animal running the streets down here.

There are more factors taken into consideration than just the raw numbers.
The lack of health care facilities that can offer what the average American might be used to, has also been noted as a factor.
Admittedly there is also the desire to incentivize more Americans to get the jab and a desire to incentivize the D.R. to do the same with their citizens.
The bottom line is that people are dying and health care systems are straining under the weight.
Here, there and everywhere.
Is the suggestion that governments should throw their hands in the air and just do nothing?
If it could make anybody feel better, the D.R. is in good company. Canada has received the same treatment.
