The subtleties of change: Guillermo Moreno looks into what Abinader promised to win the election and what he has delivered

The Dominican Republic is “in.” The country has navigated the Covid-19 pandemic as it deals with inflation caused by the freight container crisis and the impact of the war in Ukraine. Tourists and business people see the country as the darling in the Caribbean. President Luis Abinader’s ratings are among the best in the world. No one can deny these facts.

All that said, muckraking opposition politician, Guillermo Moreno writes in Diario Libre that the government has not delivered on its promise of “change.” He expresses concern the government is making compromises to continue more of the same in the name of political and economic stability and growth.

He points out the Dominican people voted for Abinader to end the stronghold of 20 years in government of the then ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), in power consecutively from 2004 to 2020.

Abinader is not done with his first term and it's ridiculous to compare goverments of the PLD which lasted about 2 decades in power vs the PRM which this August ends its second year in power. Moreno should focus on something else.

Maybe if they could provide power and water they could get high marks but this administration is sending the DR back 20 years with poor infrastructure.
How many cruise ships want to let passengers off to roam dark streets?
Haven't had water for a month where I live.
A teenager in many countries could fix things quicker and last longer.

These are the best kind of arrests................the kind where some think they are immune.................yet the US was just biding their time waiting for him.............and he delivered himself on a silver platter.

I bet his expression when arrested was priceless and likely x-rated.

He could now get life as a narco-trafficker.

Sadly, corruption is an all too common situation in the DR for politicos/generals.

Well every vote counts. Puerto Plata to Gaspar Hernadez has a few hundred thousand voters, in a country where total valid voters were 3.88 million.
Elections have been lost with much smaller margins
And I am sure the electricity horror stories are not confined the the North Coast.
I applaud his corruption reform but if it takes a little corruption to get the electricity to stay on it might be worth it.

No water here for a month and electricity out every night for the past 8 days is beyond unacceptable

The country has advanced so much in so many sectors and has become one of the best countries in the Caribbean and South America for many different reasons, but companies such as electricity and water make us look as if our beautiful country were a third world country. The government needs to do something to improve electricity and water services throughout the country. Forget expanding the metro system (which is actually a fantastic service) for now, focus on more important services and really bring the DR back to a first world status. Having lived in the DR for 19 years I have seen some improvement regarding electricity but zero improvement regarding water. This country could be so much better if it could provide two of the most essential services to the same standards as those that are expected in most advanced countries throughout the globe.

The water and electricity situation is an embarrassment, more the electricity part and despite there has been improvements. You visit countries that are poorer and less developed than the DR and they don't have an electricity issue to the level of the DR. You think it should be worse over there compared to the DR, but nope. Ridiculous to say the least.
