Gold is largest single export from Dominican Republic

The Dominican Association of Exporters (Adoexpo) celebrated its 50th anniversary last week and released some interesting numbers regarding Dominican exports. Overall, in the first third of 2022, the country has exported well over US$4.1 billion in goods and services. The Industrial Free Zones lead the pack with US$2.5 billion, a 12.66% year to year jump and a 33.49% increase over 2019.

Local exporters sent US$15 billion overseas, a health 5.86% increase year to year and a 32.5% upswing from 2019. The country’s biggest export item was gold, with exports of US$470.74 million. Medical instruments and equipment followed this at US$465 million. The United States is the largest recipient of Dominican exports, with 51% going north.

That's a surprise about medical equipment being such a large amount. Third place in the export league is cigars! What about fruit and vegetables? Don't they contribute much?

Learned something new today. I thought their biggest export was narcotics. Been telling people for years this country is not poor it's just extremely mismanaged.

Well until they can figure out how to grow a tomato, i doubt it

Medical equipment and cigars are almost entirely exported. The complete opposite is true with fruits and vegestables. Same with other products such as chicken and eggs, plantains (this should be a no brainer), rice, etc. All or most of the things produced in the DR are bought and consumed in the DR.

Others are part of international companies, but they hardly import to the DR and instead DR produce everything consumed in the DR. For example, all Kola Real sood in the DR are made in the DR despite it's a Peruvian company.

On top of that, several studies show that Dominican consumers have a preference for Dominican brands both within and outside the DR (where available).
