Sto. Dom. -- Influenza Vaccine Availability?

Hello All,

Generally I obtain my free influenza vaccine (with passport) at La Salud Publica. Sure, I could go there and ask but it would be a wasted trip if it's not available. While googling, the only concrete information I can find is an El Diario article from today, Oct. 20, then says there is no anticipated date and that it will be available "in weeks." Of course, if that's true, that's bad news. Sometimes there are private clinics (paid) that have better availability.

Any information? If no one here knows, eventually I'll just go there and ask and report back here.

Thanks.

Thanks for this. I see that it's in the mall Plaza Megacentro on the east side of Sto. Dom. across the river--a nice mall with great food in the cafeteria (the last time I went there). I see that it's a new facility that's been open for one month. Over the years, I've done very well at Amadita Labs. They even have 24 hour sites. This could be their first clinic devoted to vaccinations. Unfortunately, as is typical in the D.R., my wife was on the phone for 45 minutes, called twice, and they never answered her call. So if she can't get through, that means we have to pay money to go there without knowing cost or availability. That's life in the D.R. But great. Thanks for this.

Look into Lab Referencias too. They and Amadita are the top two.

O.P. At the moment I'm guessing that the influenza vaccinations are not available in the D.R. as of yet. Today my wife walked to Centro Sanitario. They told her that they are not available and that they have no idea when they will be available. That corroborates the El Diario news report from a few days ago. We have called the Amadita Vaccination Center in Megacentro Mall. They never pick up the phone. It's doubtful that the influenza vaccination would be available there but not in the main governmental agency. Likely a wasted trip there and back for nothing.

Meanwhile, @Pikobell gives another source: escudea.com I checked that website and under Contacto they have a WhatsApp number. I have messaged them and I'll report back. It's looking like I (or we) are just going to have to sit on this for a while and wait. BTW, you can take it with a grain of salt if you are skeptical but the weekly report I receive from an epidemiologist in the U.S. (Ph.D.) who consults with CDC, reports that the vaccine manufacturers missed the mark this year, that there is not a match between the predicted and actual variants and that the effectiveness for prevention of hospitalization is calculated to be 30-50%. Not good if true but better than 0%, one's own immunity aside.

Three years ago, I had the influenza vaccination on my list for the week following, then became sick. It was influenza and I was in bed for one month. Influenza is not AT ALL like the common cold. When I recuperated, I then got the vaccination in case of re-infection.

O.P. Ah, I spoke too soon. I received a rapid and detailed response from Escudea escudea.com via their WhatsApp number. Yes, they DO have the influenza vaccination available now. Without insurance it costs RD$2,000. They prefer appointments but do they take walk-ins. At this moment, Escudea gets my vote over Amadita. At the new Amadita vaccination center it is impossible to communicate with them. That's incompetent business.

When I get the vaccination, I'll report back.

I had a COVID vaccination before traveling to the US. Good thing because while I was there my grandson came down with COVID. (Let’s not get into the CoVID debate again.)

The point I want to share with you is that the doctor said that the COVID vaccine also includes the flu vaccine.

So either you see it as two for one or doubling who knows what in your system.

I had to be traveling all over the US, so I made the decision to get the shot since I always seem to get sick when I travel.

Hi, I'm confused. Did you get the COVID vaccination in the D.R. and, if so, where? I would really like to get that here as well if possible.

I got it here in Jamao in the DR. The contagious desease doctor who works in our little public hospital ordered it for me and a friend who was also traveling. She had it sent in from the public hospital in Moca.

If you are on the north coast and do not
Mind traveling up to Jamao I could see if she would order it in for you too.

I'm not able to make that trip. It's probably too much to ask but, if possible, could you ask your doctor how I might get a COVID vaccination in the capital--only if this is not too much trouble for you.

Bad news, Lucas. The doctor called to the Health Ministry in Santo Domingo. They told her that there are no vaccines in the country.

El Hospital General de la Plaza de la Salud used to be a place where you could get a shot of any vaccine, be it Hepatitis, Yellow Fever or whatever else. Maybe call them and ask?
