I am taking a break from this. I was really sad last night watching and reading some of the reports. The Dominicans I know are all very sad. It's like a collective national trauma.

I might be out of line saying this, but in my opinion, if nothing is done aside from "cleaning" the site and rebuilding, that is direct disrespect to all the victims. It's like nothing happened. I really hope it's not as it was posted that if the owner did something "not right" here, that he would not face any consequences. I hope that even in the DR that is not right.
If I was the Jet Set owner, as well as owning the property, I would donate it to the Government to build a memorial. I'm sure the Government could arrange a number of large donors to build something that all the Dominicans would visit and be proud of. It's not like that there is some future disco or business which would be rebuilt that locals would support.

I found interesting video, this guy just tell all different possibility how this tragedy caused.

I thought I could but I couldnt watch it fully. Makes me too sad.
They are very serious about this. We have a friend who runs a media site for a local town. They have been getting "notices" since this happened warning about comments/posts.
They got one : https://somospueblo.com/arrestan-a-...olapso-en-jet-set-y-acuso-a-policias-de-robo/

Wow! Assuming the DR media report is true, it’s just another indicator of the government's concern for the safety and sanctity of human life in the DR. I can’t begin to imagine what the relatives of the deceased will think about this announcement as they bury their dead.
Unfreakingbelievable!
I don't believe it.
Biggest loss of life in a single 24 hr period in decades.

Nope.

He said he was there when the roof collapsed and saw police stealing but he wasn't even there.
I also heard a couple tell the story of the police getting them out from under the rubble. So I guess there are good cops too.

Luis has extended the period of national mourning until Sunday the 13th.

All of the Abasaca Basketball Semi Final games planned for this weekend have been cancelled here in Santiago as well.

Again, Dominicans aren't gonna let this one be ignored and so easily swept under the rug. All of my friends here have told me that nothing other than a Memorial is appropriate for this site.

I disagree but again it is your opinion. The Dominican culture as most of us know is of the mindset/thinking that things happen for a reason, Gods will if you must. Not saying it's right or wrong. The media will always have their take on the events. Each with their own view. In the end all that matters is the facts, and we are a long way from that.
KC. I agree with a lot of what you are saying here. I observed the stoicism exhibited by Dominicans during funerals and, as you say, they said it was God’s will. I was glad they had their faith to sustain them. What I don’t agree with is the government relying on this stoicism to absolve themselves of any blame or responsibility by limiting the investigation. The buck stops with the President, as it should.

Certain facts have come out but the facts necessary to confirm the actual reasons for the collapse have yet to come out and won’t come out if the announcement about building reconstruction starting now is true. I’ve always given the President credit for his political acumen. I can’t imagine he would be this callous and disrespectful to the survivors and relatives of the deceased. His personal political risk is minimal because he is not running again. What is at risk here is his reputation.

The police are taking respect over this event seriously thre is a colmado on my Street that has stools and small tables. They have a regular crowd and play music. Last night there was a smaller than usual crowd and you could barely hear the music. The police came and shut them down. Put a yellow tape around the premises and told them they are shut down till Monday nite..

Yes, Luis ordered that any night club, bars you name it to be close for next 5 days I believe to show respect.

I do not see it that way. This happened Monday night, families are still burying their loved ones. What do you want the President to say or the government at this point? I am sure all the answers are not there yet. It would be callous and disrespectful for him to speak out without all the facts. You're giving a lot of credit to what is in media. Again, none of us are privy to all the facts or what is known at this point. But I do understand your point.

MiamiDRGuy people are going to propose a lot of things, what should be done or not done. It is a bit too soon for anything at this point.

Has there been like a press conference by the police, bomberos and the authorities ? Saying what they know and what will happen next in the rescue effort and in the investigation. Maybe I missed it.

Not sure what you mean? My post was about the proposed "memorial park", post #172. Meaning people are going to "propose" a variety of different things that should be done/not done with that area. Just way too soon to even be talking about it at this point.

It was Monday night. It is Friday evening now. I must have missed it then. I didn't hear about a press conference by the authorities about the disaster. What has been done. What they know. The continued recovery process and an investigation. I am just wondering if anyone has a link or something.

The President may have given orders that no public or official statements are to be released to the media unless authorized by his office, especially during the mourning period. . One has to believe he is trying to avoid the big mess that occurred in Punta Cana just over a month ago with the young college girl.

I am sure the president will soon have a press conference and speak about everything that they are doing and what they know of what has happened. The plan going forward for the victims and their families and about an investigation.

On this forum it is a shame we can't be critical of the government and the system or lack of a system. There are some amazing stories out there of people surviving and being rescued. There is definitely some hope.
