I will be going to the DR to attend the Puerto Plata " Merengue Festival ", September 26th-28th. Can any one recommend a hotel or resot near the Malecon , where the activities will be held? Or should we stay in another area and rent a car ?

You can stay at Fun Royale-Fun Tropicale in Playa Dorada. The resort is only about a 10 min ride from the malecon. You can use any of the local transports to get to town in a short period of time.

There are many hotels within walking or short taxi ride to the Malecon, and of varying prices. The cheapest, and yet clean safe, but local sstyle, is the Indio. 300rd a night, four blocks to the malecon , two blocks west of Caribe Tours terminal. Another that used to be an upper end whorehouse but has been redone and is quite nice and respectable is Mountainview, est of Caribe tours up the hill five blocks. Price should be about 75US night. Very nice. Any taxi will know Mountainview. The Indio is local knowledge only. I'd stay at Indio if you can get a room.

I would support fightfish's recommendation that you stay in Puerto Plata itself & not in Playa Dorada as per Snowbird's recommendation. Nothing wrong with Playa Dorada but if you're only here for 3 days & for the festival then you'll need to be near the action & not in Playa Dorada where you would need a taxi particularly late at night. And after a night of dancing with maybe the odd drink thrown in ;) it's a good idea to be in walking distance of your hotel rather than driving, particularly if you're not familiar with driving here. The festival is always held at La Puntilla end of the Malecon. Also on the Malecon is Apart Hotel Lomar, approx US$32 per night, further in town the Victoriana which is slightly less expensive. More PP hotels on this thread:

Why Puerto Plata Casino Beach Resort was not mentioned? Across from Casita Rica.

It is not in operation any longer? Very big rooms (actually one or two-bedroom appartments). No noise at all. Large swimming pool. Walking distance to Cristal. Basketball and tennis courts. Security. Parking. Guest friendly. Casino. Wedding parties. I used to live there when it was $15US/night. A very good place. Grahame used to work there as well, ask Gene.

A lovely place indeed!!

It wasn't mentioned by me because it's at the other end of the Malecon to the Puntilla where the Merengue Festival is held. Unless you're extremely fit I don't think you'd want to walk that distance from the festival to your hotel each night! You'd need a taxi (so could just as well stay in Playa Dorada). Also my impression is it has gone downhill somewhat in recent years but the person to answer that is dv8 who has lived there. Montesilva IS clean & nice but again a bit of a hike from the Puntilla. However, it all depends on what edk0514 wants and whether they like walking healthy distances. The focus on downtown PP was to suggest places which are nearby to the Puntilla & can therefore be staggered to ;).

Room near festival

We are looking for something clean & nice, as close to the festival as possible. Money is not an object. I'd rather pay" more" for a nice/ close room ,than taxi fare both way, each night. Thanks again for any advice. THIS SITE IS GREAT !!!!!

Kidding??!! Walking Puerto Plata Malecon is the most enjoyable thing ever!! Any moment if tired - motoconcho is right here. 10 peso only. From LOng Beach to OLd Fortress! It is beautiful! I do not like the renovation, but anyway.

You know how much I love you, I told you this many times!!, but this time you are kidding!!

Strangely enough, I'm not. I don't want to milk this to death but...........yes, it can be a lovely walk for those who like walking. Not everyone does. Early morning sunshine when it isn't too hot is a great time to walk the Malecon. In any event one end to the other will take about 40 minutes unless you're one of these speed walkers who always seem to me to be using their elbows for propulsion..........:cheeky:. Not everyone wants to walk 40 mins after a night of drinking & dancing. The other thing which needs to be pointed out is the possibility for 'undesirables' lurking on the Malecon late at night. 99 times out of a 100 nothing will go wrong, but 2 gringos walking the length of the Malecon late at night are setting themselves up as a target. Unnecessarily setting themselves up as a target when they could walk 10 or 15 mins to any of the downtown hotels already recommended. OK they could still be a target but as most of the people attending will be dispersing downtown when it finishes, they are far more likely to be among company. I just never recommend people doing what I personally wouldn't - I would walk the Malecon in the day, of course, but not at night.

Which reminds me, edk0514, you will probably find the participants in the festival a happy, friendly group of people only too willing to be helpful. Just be aware that any large gatherings anywhere in the world can attract pickpockets and Puerto Plata is not immune. Be smart & don't wear too much jewellery or take more cash than you will need each evening. And...........have a fabulous time! :)
