Would $1600 a month allow 1 person to live comfortably in the DR ?

My fear is that the DR in 20-25 years will have " caught " up with NA/Europe in terms of cost of life. I say 20-25 years because that is when we will be paid our retirement pensions. Hence why we have been spending 6 months a year in the DR for the past 10+ years. Hedging our bets 😂.

Would $1600 a month allow 1 person to live comfortably in the DR ?

That's why I added that it depended on where the poster came from. He is right saying that pork filet mignon ( with 1 L ) is cheap in the DR. Around 175 pesos per lb at LaSirena if I remember correctly. Beef fillet is more expensive at around 450/500 pesos per lb---- which is dirt cheap in my...

Would $1600 a month allow 1 person to live comfortably in the DR ?

Filet mignon comes from the French language and refers to the fillet of pork----even though it could be used for the fillet of any animal---- however the beef equivalent in culinary terms is the tournedos.

Would $1600 a month allow 1 person to live comfortably in the DR ?

Filet mignon, depending on where the poster is from, is usually the filet cut of the pig. Great piece of meat, btw. And dead cheap, even in supermarkets, in the DR.

Can't pay overstay fee in cash now??

My guess is all plastic equals credit card. Even Amex cards issued in the EU are not credit cards per se, they are differed debit ( ie the whole amount owed is taken out of a bank account at 30 or 60 days. ). One of my french bank even issues differed debit cards that has the word " credit "...

    Chicken Etiquette in the DR

Yeah, I fully understand the problem 😢. Thankfully a combination of the neighbors understanding ---- well at least knowing -----that I don't want their cocks in my conuco and us throwing the bloody animals over the hedge when we can get our hands on them, means that any thoughts of them...

    Chicken Etiquette in the DR

Proper etiquette is to leave chickens alone, on your property, not in your house.... obviously. However that is on them. I don't give a 💩....🤣. Stupid chopo fighting cocks fly into my conuco and get dispatched very quickly. Somebody started to say something, one day, a long time ago. I told...

D.R. Telecoms and the Ins and Outs of "Recarga."

In the above, I wrote 4g, but it's actually 5g networks. You can tell I am getting old, as I don't keep up with the latest tech thingmajingy 🤣

D.R. Telecoms and the Ins and Outs of "Recarga."

I have Red by SFR ( each operator has a cheaper sub company that is only available on internet --- as opposed to having physical stores ). My plan, that I can change anytime, no fixed contract, is 8.99€ per month for unlimited calls and SMS and 80 Gb of 4g internet . Roaming does not exist in...

Any Reputable Coin or Jewelry Dealers on the North Coast?

Hey, hey, we can also just be hedging our bets ! I fully embrace the Capital dominating ways of our societies, however I do happen to stock--- or hoard, depending on one's views--- food, water, ammo, silver and gold....... Just in case 😉😉

D.R. Telecoms and the Ins and Outs of "Recarga."

Exactly, I do the same. Internet at home, and when out and about and I need internet, I ll buy a 3 day internet pack for 90 pesos. The post-pago rob you blind here..... Expensive AF. Now I know our american friends are used to overprices phone plans, however in Europe I use a plan that gives me...

D.R. Telecoms and the Ins and Outs of "Recarga."

Exactly what Cavok said. You buy 500 pesos of recarga. You now have a portfolio of 500 pesos with that particular operator on an account associated with your phone number. You can phone normally and it will deduct the cost from your portfolio. You can also buy a " service" . You can get...

Any Reputable Coin or Jewelry Dealers on the North Coast?

On European exchanges, the stock is like +8.5% over 1 week....... Not complaining, but not buying anymore for the time being. Personally I like physical gold and silver vs their paper counterparts. I have a hard time believing paper gold sellers/issuers actually have the physical asset, even...

    Daytime Running Lights

No, not as bright as a standard headlight. The light came from the headlight itself.

    Daytime Running Lights

There was actually an intermediate state of affairs. New cars in Europe for the past 5 years or more came with lights that never went out. So you have full beam, head lights and what we call feux de positions ( ie, position lights ). So the feux de positions never went out on new-ish cars, then...

Get tint on your windscreen---- like my car😐--- and voilà, you are not blinded by the very bright lights. Now, you can't see💩 at night.......but you can't have everything 😆😆 P.S. I refuse to drive that particular car at night because of the tint problem.

Building a Home usd100k or Less

Get an " architect" , it may cost a bit more ----- in appearance only. It will save you on the overall price. He will manage all the different actors and --- hopefully --- keep them in check.

    For "What it's worth" department

Ok, I may be a bit dumb, but it is only useful when you have no main water pump, right ? Otherwise one would just use the main water pump when they want a hard shower. At least that's what I do. Or do as the " regular Dominican " would and use the ladrona pump.

Would $1600 a month allow 1 person to live comfortably in the DR ?

When I got married, all my family and friends from Europe brought top-of-the-range booze...... I am nearing the end of the last bottles------ nearly 14 years later 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Would $1600 a month allow 1 person to live comfortably in the DR ?

Yes, 1600 a month is very doable. Now, if you are going to use another source of income in order to go back home once in a while and/or for large-ish one-time expenses, say furniture or a car, well then 1600 will go a loooong way.
