Hi all,

My girl friend and I are going to Punta Cana in 2 weeks staying at the Barcelo Bavaro Casino Resort. I would like to get some information on the Barcelo Bacvaro Golf Course. i.e. how hard is it to get tee times, condition of the course, how difficult is it... etc. etc.

Thank you in advance

We just returned last Wednesday and stayed at the Casino Hotel. What a beautiful complex. We can hardly wait to go back.

My husband and his brother played golf 6 times at the golf course. They always were able to get a tee time - you have to book it 24 hours in advance and get there early to make your tee time. They would make their tee time for the next day when they golfed. My husband is an avid golfer. He said the layout of the course is quite good - a lot of thought went into it, but unfortunately the upkeep is ruining the course. There is a lot of water on the course, which made it challenging. He was disappointed in the condition - probably would not bring his clubs again.

Cart rental is $26 US per person. Carts are mandatory up to 2:00 p.m. each day - no caddies are available.

If you aren't a real serious golfer, you will enjoy your game. Go with an open mind.

I don't want to appear smug, but I did a fairly extensive review of the golf course in 1999. I searched for it in the 1999 message archive, but to no avail. Perhaps you can direct this person to that review?

I found your excellent review in February 1999 report under Re: Casinos

Judy and Marvin,

Thank you both for your responses. Marvin, your critique of the course was very good. But as I was needing more recent information on the course, Judy's reply was more in line in what I was looking for.

Thanks again.

Re: Attn: DR1

Tim and Judy,

I appreciate your point Tim, however, I have friends that were there last year as well and they told me things were much the same there. I doubt the physcical arrangement, conditioning or management of the course has changed much since then.

My point is that what I call average conditioning for the Carib., is what Judy's husband is calling poor conditioning. That's not to say there aren't better conditioned courses in the DR and around the Carribbean. However, you will pay a premium for those, most of the time at least $75 US (not the $30 - $60 at the BB).

The good thing is that most of the courses in the Carib. are resort related and they therefore were designed properly and built to look like a golf course. The not so good thing is that many times materials were in short supply, good soil, a properly graded sand for greens and bunkers, proper water volumes, and in the past even proper grasses. Courses being built now around the Carib. are costing big bucks because todays consumer demands better conditioning and it can sometimes cost a lot just to get the proper materials. Even then, maintenance can be difficult. Most of the time effluent is being used for irrigation and there are chemistry issues for many grasses with effluent. Also, the proper maintenance equipment is very expensive and sometimes not as available as here.

Anyway, I didn't intend to go on and on. The advice I give to my friends is have fun - joke around with the caddies, chase the chickens off your cart, "jack-up" the ball everywhere and don't keep score. In short, don't go to the Carribean to play golf, just play golf while you're in the Carib.

Re: Attn: DR1

Excellent advise, Marvin - well worded. Go and play golf while you are there - don't go to the Caribbean to play golf.

My husband has reached that conclusion as well!

Actually, I did hear back from the Barcelo hotel chain and they advised that they were renovating the course this summer.
