Stacey, it is not advisable to change ? in the DR, better to bring US$. US$1 = ~RD$36.

Hi,

Can i ask why it is better if the exchange rate is 54 to the ? versus 36 to the $??
Blue - I have googled before and found it to be very different upon arrival, thought i could ask people who are actually there now so i can get a better read on it but thanks anyway.

Thank you both for replying so speedily!

For ?1 you get about US$1.52

say you want to change ?100 - you'd get US$152

When you arrive in the DR with your US$, you change them into pesos:
US$152 x RD$36 = RD$5,472

So it works out the same as directly changing ?100 into pesos @ 54. Thing is, the DR banks do not handle so much sterling so you will probably get a worse rate.

The advice remains: change your ?? into US$ at home.

Best rate for sterling

As a Brit now living here I agree with all the foregoing. If you decided to live here either permanently or only for the winter there is a way to get an even better exchange rate, let me know.

Just use your cash card and you do not have to pay two sets of exchange fees.
That has always been the best way for me to access my sterling account and change sterling into pesos in the D.R.

I get better rates at the cash point than the money changers give.
