How to locate an apartment?

How do I go about finding an apartment/house that is affordable on the North Coast? The only things I've looked at are on-line and they're really expensive!! We are interested in a move to the DR, and with everyone's advice, we want to rent in different areas to check it out first.

i've found its best to just find a good broker and get them to look with you. down here you tend to end up paying a commission one way or another anyways, so better to get them to do the work up front.

What I would suggest is come down for couple months and check different parts of the island first to see what you like the best. We lived on the north coast for 2 years and then came to the south and fell in love with this part of the island. So before you commit to a year or so rental agreement, travel around and see.
