Hotels for the budget traveler in Santo Domingo

Does anyone know any funky hotels for the budget traveler. It doesn't have to be in the Zona Colonia but, obviously, safety is an issue. And it is better if it is the kind of place which doesn't rent by the hour. Then again...:laugh:

There are a few on calle danae and a new one just about to open. Not sure of the name for the new place but they planned to be open for semana santa. Flat screens in all rooms, shower stalls with glass doors rather than curtains and all furniture is brand new.

Not sure on pricing but I have heard about 40-45 per night. It is across the street from hotel residencia.

Very nice boutique hotel. I was there last night eating at the rooftop restaurant. Sundays are great cause you can have a drink and listen to Bony? playing on the next corner in front of the San Francisco Ruins.

Not sure of their rates but I would give them a call: Europa Hotel Boutique - Dominican Republic

I have stayed at the hotel Europa, this past Xmas-----lobby and rooftop terrace looks great. Rooms, AC, breakfast were horrible. Priced at about US$75 per night, it was not a good deal. For my money, I will pay the extra $25-$30 at the Hotel Frances by Accor(previous Sofitel) a few steps away, but a world apart in terms on amenities. Lovely boutique hotel right in the heart of la Zona Colonial with advertised price of $99 per night with an offer of stay 2 nights and get the third free!!!!. I am considering it for my destination wedding, enough said.

What is your idea of inexpensive? could be or could not be lots of choices, with pool, depending on your definition.

Thanks,

The Hispaniola has a great pool - last time I checked the price was $75/night [$70 for seniors] and it includes a great buffet breakfast.

I don't believe you will find any hotel in SD with a pool for less than $80 a night. The only hotels I know of with a pool are your large Hotel/Casino places.

Another good option for a low priced hotel is The Carey House at $RD1500 a night. The Carey House is in a very quiet residential area a 10 minute walk to parque independencia with off street parking, in room high speed WiFi, frig in most rooms, onsite restaurant, A/C....... but the rooms are small ............

.::Welcome to carey House Hotel::.

I have stayed in a dozen or more hotels in SD and Carey House is one of my favorite three hotels.

Jaguar Aparta/Hotel is another favorite and for special occasions Jaragua Hotel/Casino.

This place got really great reviews on TA. I would love to try it, but we would need two rooms with my teens. As it is, I got a great room free with my loyalty points at a large chain motel. Free is good.

Anyway, check out the Coco Boutique Hotel:

I can recommend the "Foreigners Club Hotel".....it's a small, clean, B&B type hotel two blocks from the colonial zone. Rates average between $35-50 +/- per night depending on the room size, accomodations but they have hot/cold pressure water, ac, cable tv, wifi, rooftop terrace, 3 blocks from the Malecon - no pool, etc...but your not going to find a hotel with a pool for these prices either.

English speaking staff - Alberto and Juan....give them a call at 809-689-3017
