Today from approx. 6 AM till just now - 8 AM Codetel suffered major outage and there was no internet in Sosua. That was not your computer or router problem, as probably many, including myself first thought.

Here in Santiago I spent all day yesterday taking my network apart and putting it back together trying to figure out what the problem was, turns out it was Claro.

Then at home in the morning I had no internet in my house. I called tech support and the hold time was exceptionally long - around 30 minutes. I think that means that alot of people were having problems. By the time I had a rep on the line the internet was back.

Now at the office again the connection has been coming and going like like it took a handfull of viagra and a handful of laxative at the same time.

I have been without Codotel since Tuesday as a tree knocked down my line and Codotel has yet to repair the problem.

I bought 150" of internet cable and tapped into a Cable internet provider.

You have to learn how to survive here!

Off all day in Puerto Plata also, returned 15 mins ago. BushBaby phoned Codetel this morning and was told it was 'maintenance'. Yours truly went WiFi signal hunting this morning, saw a whole lot of nice vehicles pulling up outside a building on Luis Ginebra near El Furgon which is alleged to have WiFi, so got out & enquired:
'Are you here for the WiFi?'
'No, do?a, we're here for the meeting with Senator Vargas'.
Do?a turns round & sees Senator's new office which she had not seen before. Ooops! But, never let an opportunity pass you by
'Would you mind asking him if he has WiFi & popping out to tell me?':cheeky:

Claro/Codetel deja a la gente a oscuro del Internet

Puerto Plata se queda sin internet

It seems ATMs were affected also, according to Diario Libre:
Cajeros autom?ticos fuera de servicio por falla t?cnica

And no, no WiFi from the Senator's office ;).

The customer relations robot at our local Codetel office told me that "the engineers are updating the systems". Yeah right.

Their systems were down for most of yesterday here in the east, as were Banco Popular's. Our connection came back last night, according to Mr C.

I got a taste the night before, but in the early a.m. of Friday (5-6 or so) I --fortunately--downloaded wnat I needed, and Then, at about 6 it all when south!! I could not move stuff around and there was no connectivitiy. However, I was able to use IE rather than Firefox....which I thought was strange. I had the four lights on the modem, I re-booted it as well as the laptop, and, around 8 things went back to normal.

Previously, I had been experiencing some really slow downloads (12 kb/sec!) and I feared a trojan or virus, but a systems check came up with nothing, and after 8, I was back at what I pay for..76 kb/sec...(I don't download music or videos or play games so speed is not the be all or end all for me)

Because of a lack of information (I was not as patient as MrMike on the phone), I was worried and that in itself was bad...who needs to worry these days?? Especially when half our brains are in a freakin' computer??

Vent over. Glad we are back on line...Have a happy weekend, drive, swim, drink safely...

just to let people know - codetel seem to have more bi-lingual people working for them than 2 years ago, so if you ring them there is more chance of speaking to one , than there used to be - Im sorry but my spanish hasnt improved

Updating systems ONLY because the old systems broke. That I can believe.

I seem to recall some discussion a while back where there were Claro problems and someone was told by Claro insiders that there was some faulty equipment in the network but that they had no ETA on replacing it.

Maybe this has finally come? Or maybe not.

In my office all employees are logged into MSN full time. Since Thursday, though the connection seems fine for regular browsing, the MSN messenger seems to disconnect from Microsoft servers fairly regularly. ( a few times an hour it seems)

It connects right back instantly, but still its odd, and more than a little annoying - certainly not a sign of a high quality connection.

They told me they have started updating works as they said before on that thread, but only in some areas. They still have equipment updates to do in Sosua control office, but there is some improvement today. According to one technician that wont be completed until August.

Codotel put in a new line for me today and I saw them all over Sosua working.

They actually outsourced this work to contractors, which shows they have more problems than they can handle.
