Check your cookies, actually delete them and try and login in again.
Many, many people login to the chat room without a problem.
Pretty much 100% of the time it's a cookie or java issue on the users machine.
This being the case, nothing I can really do. Best advice, delete your cookies, install java or try another browser.

I cleared the cookies/cache, no luck. I tried IE, no luck. I logged in via a university computer in the library, no luck.

Don't give up/ give in so easily!!! How/ where does it tell you that your username is not valid if you just 'click' the Chat room link?
It may be a Java / Microsoft issue too. They got into a pixxing match and Microsoft dumped Java. They came out with their own version called Microsoft VM (Virtual Machine) that you may need to download at the Microsoft site to get it to work.
Just tried it on the following combinations.
Firefox 3.6.3 / OS X 10.6.3 = No problem
Safari 4.05 / OS X 10.6.3 = No problem
Opera 10.1 / OS X 10.6.3 = No problem
Chrome 5.0.356 / OS X 10.6.3 = Problem
The only browser causing me problems here is Chrome (Google).
