For those that think a few pesos don't add up to very much.

Do the MATH!

These are my estimates of money given to beggars and/or window washers.
I am not a mathematician, so I could be wrong in my estimates.

If I am "Way Off" on my calculations, due to old age syndrome, I will ask that this thread be deleted.

Now of course there will be bad weather, and the Begging/Window Wash time will be decreased. But we are talking ONLY 5 PESOS average per incidence.
And I am talking Santiago (That's where I live) where there is lots of traffic to prey upon.
Yes, I realize (Ginny) this would not apply to ALL places in the DR.

For purpose of this Example:

Traffic Light Cycle Time 2 1/2 Minutes / 150 Seconds / 37 1/2 Seconds per direction.
That's 24 light changes per hour.

Beggar: Average of just 5 pesos per Donation.
Windshield Washer: Average of just 5 pesos per paying customer.

ONE donation / paid window wash per light cycle - average 5 pesos.
120 pesos per hour.
960 pesos per 8 hour day.
4,800 pesos per 40 hour week.
20,800 pesos per month average - $568.30 U.S.
249,600 pesos per year.

TWO donations / paid window washes per light cycle - average 5 pesos each.
240 pesos per hour.
1,920 pesos per 8 hour day.
9,600 pesos per 40 hour week.
41,600 pesos per month average - $1,136.61 U.S.
499,200 pesos per year.

(Exchange rate estimate: 36.60)

How much are the Police and AMET paid per month?

The Haitians have MANY children out there ALL begging.
What do you estimate their combined donation income amount to per month.

Let's drop that 5 pesos down to even less:
ONE (1) peso average per traffic cycle comes to 4,160 pesos per month, per beggar.
TWO(2) pesos average per traffic cycle comes to 8,320 pesos per month, per beggar.
THREE(3) pesos average per traffic cycle comes to 12,480 pesos per month, per beggar.
FOUR(4) pesos average per traffic cycle comes to 16,640 pesos per month, per beggar.

From what I've seen at the traffic lights I frequently stop at is very rarely does a window washer get a client every time.

In addition, it appears that window washers last only a few months. Therefore I don't think it's quite so lucrative and wouldd expect the actual number to be even less than half of the lowest you provided.
