In the Domican Republic custom, who names the child? If the woman names the child does the father have any legal recourse if he does not want to accept her selection? What if they are not married?

We are Canadian and had been close friends to a Dominican family for almost 5 years at that time. When she was about 7 months pregnant, they phoned us and asked us to not only be godparents but, to also name their daughter-to-be.

We were very privileged to be asked and gave them 2 different names and told them who we knew with that name and what they meant to us. We also told them we would not be offended if they did not like either name and went with a different name.

The day after she was born, we received a phone call with the message "Emelina es grande!" Emelina was born 5-1/2 years ago and we have seen the family 6 times since her birth - the first time, she was 3 months old when we attended her baptism in Maimon.
