Hi people

Does anyone know where we can get Morphine in tablet form?

My partner, Tina, is on MST 30mg twice a day and will run out of it in a few days time. In the UK, her doctor could only prescribe a month's supply as it is a "controlled drug"so she wrote a "To Whom It May Concern" letter to any fellow doctor out here to confirm she proscibes it.

On Whirleybird's advice, we approached the chemist in Cabarete but, helpful as she is, she THINKS we might get it in Satiago but is not sure, and thinks we might need a Dominican prescription anyway...?

If any of you know where we might be able to get it, IF we need a prescription (or if her letter will do) or has any other useful information, we would be very, very grateful...?

I am sure you will need a dominican prescription - so that would be your first point of call. It is available in this country, but sorry cannot help you with where exactly in the North. Probably at a pharmacy near to or attached to a hospital or clinic.

Morphine availability

Out of country for three years due to health problems...But, strongly recommend, based on past experience, Centro Medico Bournigal in Puerto Plata...Santiago may be your best bet, but I cannot say..Good luck.

You have several options, but I would start with going to see a local physician who can write you a prescription. It's always best, as many are not going to sell controlled substances without a script, and better for you as well. Also, if the Long-Acting Morphine is unavailable locally, there may be something comparable such as Long-acting Oxycodone that may work until the Morphine arrives. Hope this helps.

Yes, the farmacia at Central Medical Bournigal in Puerto Plata would be a good place to start. If they don't have it, they are good about calling around to see where it is available in Puerto Plata.

You will most certainly need a prescription, and not a regular prescription. There is a special prescription form and procedure for obtaining medications on the controlled list, which morphine certainly will be. They can only prescribe a limited amount here, too.

Not sure how persuasive a letter will be, since somebody determined to get drugs could easily fabricate something like that.

You should have started your search earlier. What sort of specialist was treating her in the UK? If we know the specialty needed for her case, we may be able to suggest a competent doctor that she can go to.

I hadn't realised you had started a thread on this as well, Colin, as I was busy researching how the substance is branded here, in order to give you the correct name so that I could answer your PM on this subject.

Just to confirm what I said in the PM for the benefit of anyone else, IF it is a controlled substance here (& I gave you the website to check that), then as Ken says, only certain doctors are licensed to prescribe substances on the controlled list.

But the good news is that we know it has been available here as Dimorf for at least the last 6 years and there will likely be other brands also.
Sulfato de morfina, analg?sico espinal de alta eficacia

Empresa farmac?utica presenta producto

Might be worth calling in at CMC just outside Sosua to see if they have an available doctor to write the script.

Paracetamol y codeina

There is a "new" drug on the marked, it is named TYLEX CD. It is codeine phosphate and paracetamol.

500mg paracetamol, and 30mg codeine.

The Tylex costs 1000-1400peso for a box of 30.

Hope this info is helpful.

edit: You can get a doctor to write you a prescription for 800peso at the CMC, but you dont really need it, just call the pharmacia and the deliver to your door if you are in a very bad shape.

Would you happen to know if Tylex CD is available in effervescent form? If so, it would be great for me but don't think it answers the OP's question re Morphine.

morphine is a controlled substance and you do have to have a prescription from dominican doctor in order to get it.
try visiting doctor mejia in clinica brugal, he speaks perfect english and can probably write a receta medica for that.
as for a farmacia taht may hold this drug: either centro medico bournigal or farmacia popular (calle beller, close to the cathedral).

All said and done:
1) Go see a doctor for you friend's ailment. Orthopedist or whichever.
2) Show him the RX from the UK doctor and the pill container.
3) Ask him for help

Only certain doctors are allow to write script for controlled substances. The major pharmacies are the ones that seel this stuff.

It is all fairly well cut and dried. Just follow the rules and you will have no trouble.

It would be helpful if you had the medical records on hand too.

Thanks to all of you but no joy!

Servimed suggested we see a Psychiatrist in Puerto Plata and all CmC in Sosua said was they could give morphine intravenously in an emergency but she shouldn't be on it anyway!

With both Doctors saying it is not available in tablet form ANYWHERE in the DR, we are trying to get some shipped over from the UK by courier. In the meantime, one kind poster has a few days supply he did not want.

It's what I've been saying in another post, I am AMAZED at the kindness of people on this site! Thank you all......

It was certainly introduced here in tablet form 6 years ago. If it isn't here any longer it means it has been taken off the market. I did a google search in Spanish to see if it had been removed and could find nothing.

I too find it hard to believe that no Extended-Release Morphine is available ANYWHERE in the DR. This is a very common and cheap treatment for cancer pain. Or any kind of chronic pain. While the name brand you are using may not be available in the DR, there most certainly will be an equivalent availble. I would say the MST 30 mg and the Dimorf LC 30 mg are going to be equivalent.

Hey Guy;

A friend of mine while in Rio had surgery for an acute appendix rupture and ensuing sepsis, to control pain they used dimorf sulfate which was explained to be Dilaudid (Hydromorphone, synthesized from Morphine and reportedly better at pain reduction with less side effects) in extended release tablets, seemingly what you are looking for

Be careful as "mg for mg" the Dimorf is 5-6 times stronger, so likely a 5-6mg would be equivalent to the 30mg you are used to

The other thing you need to be very certain with is what they bind the active drug with, God only knows what could be in that tablet, from Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to Atropine. Make sure your friend can tolerate what is "mixed

I have no idea what is available in DR, my only experience with pain medication in DR was a chance meeting with a lady that had quite a large bandage on her hand, when I inquired she related she had fallen on coral and severed several tendons and broken bones in her hand. When we talked, she said the micro surgery was incredibly inexpensive and was in her impression quite successful, BUT they used local during the procedure and would only give her aspirin post operative

I am NOT a doctor nor do I have any medical training, just relaying a personal experience

Best of luck

in any case there are only few pharmacies in the whole of POP that sell controlled drugs (that includes pain management medicine):
farmacia centro in centro medico bournigal
farmacia popular on calle beller 27, down the street from cathedral - 809 586 1515
farmacia puente de la guinea on calle separacion, very close to tienda jimenez - 809 261 0878
they will be able to tell you more about pills you are looking for.

A bit of potentially relevant information: looks like DNCD has suspended some class B CIDC certificates (those relating to importation, making or selling some class B controlled medications, in relation to certain farmacies where there have been 'irregularities'). These are mainly in SD, Santiago, Rio San Juan & Nagua & the substances listed in the article don't appear to include what the OP was looking for, but there could be others not mentioned.
