I am getting ready for my second trip to Santo Domingo. The first trip was business oriented so I didn't have much time to actually enjoy myself. I was just curious as to how Dominicans view African Americans? I'm around Obama's color so I'm sure I wouldn't be confused as a Haitian. I do remember when I was there that a group of Dominicans asked me where I was from and I just said "Soy negro." They quickly corrected me and then said terms like mulatto, trigueno, etc. In the US I am considered black just as a dark skinned black person is, however it doesn't seem that easy in the DR.

So my question is are there different levels of blackness in the Dominican Republic? Also is negro a word primarily reserved for Haitians? Thanks!

They view African Americans as foreigners.
Yes, there are different terms for skin tones.
Forget about the labels. Good people are appreciated regardless of color.
Enjoy your trip.

Let's not go over this topic again, we try and avoid race a skin color threads on DR1. We know how it usually ends up.

Yes, Dominicans have a word for every shade. Do a search on the board, many, may posts covering this topic.
