Although this is something I discourage, I want to make an exception myself this time...

Thanks to the Expo in Jarabacoa, we met this guy who has an incredible litter of pure bred Pyrenean Mountain Dogs (Great Pyrenees, as they are known in the US).

Both mom and dad are at his house, and mom, at the age of 4 had her first litter... 6 beautifull pups (3 males, 3 females), well taken care off (well socialised, washed, inoculated, de-wormed, passports, puppy-food, etc...)

The owner is keeping one of the females himself, but sought our help in finding good homes for the remainder...

Enjoy the pics...

and an adult one...

These dogs make great family-companions, and are great with kids. They were bred to guard sheep in the mountains against wolves, men and other predators, and therefore make great guard-dogs as well...

The adults weigh up to 150 lbs... :bunny:

Read his post. He paid for and has a classified ad on DR1.

Go look up AD # 5213: DR1 - Classifieds

If we are at the bottom, why would you want to post your ad on DR1?

Moving on...

Nice looking dog! A neighbor of mine in England had one of these, not as white as the ones in the photo you posted, bit more silver looking.

We have noticed colours of dogs change with the climate... all our Malinois became darker here... and our aussie became lighter coloured... so like humans... dogs apparently adapt colour to climate...

and to set everything straight... these are not my dogs... I'm doing this solely to find these wonderfull dogs great homes... I paid for the ad, and have the promise of the owner, he will pay me back for the ad if he can find good homes for his dogs...

Without in any way wishing to derail the thread, I would be interested in hearing what other people think about having breeds of dog in the DR that have been bred for much colder climes? With very dense, heavy coats I would have thought it would be a life of trying to find a cool, shady place and lots of panting even if the coat doesn't grow as it would in the mountains! Are they clipped?

many years back i had 2 huskies living with us on the north coast. the female did not get the under coat, she arrived as a puppy from NY.
She loved swimming in the pool, even laying on chaise lounge next to the pool she enjoyed so much! and the male was 2 years old when arrived in DR, he had this real thick fur coat and preferred for that reason any breezy place. if i was searching for him I just have to go to the highest sand pile on the property LOL there he was! He did not swim in the pool but going into the ocean.........wow this happiness and spark in his eyes....unforgettable.

The male died of age, he was 12 years old. The female got poisoned :-( after she had about 6 years. Both i can say were never sick! And they loved the climate.
Pure breed i need to say, need a real good balanced diet to keep them healthy.

Belgiank is out giving training to two Golden Retrievers and their owner in Buena Vista since I am still "out" due to a heatstroke from previous demo weekend.

Although we think the same, I am sure he will answer your question Chirimoya, when he returns.

i did not know about that breed of dogs,
they look fantastic.
Flo,
no need to question bordrules which are businessguidelines.
they are made by the bordowners/managers and will like in every business be handled by the owners will, who doesn't like them can move somewhere else.
i always appreciated the DR1 handling of those rules, it protects their AD clients, otherwise why to pay for commercials when you can get them for free?
and here on DR1 is only 1 license holder to sell fishies, his name is not Flo, lol.

BelgianK,
you are our dog expert here,
what is your opinion about dogs naturally living in cold climates to adapt to a tropical climate, as puppies born here and as adult imports, too?
cheers
Mike

Maybe somewhat more information concirning the dogs.

The litter is a very nice litter, mother is been taken well care of before, during and after pregnancy. She looks very good (checked myself)

Pups are very well socialized which means that the owner has been busy with the pups from week 3 when they become a bit more independent.

Pups are already used to drive along in the car, are not scared of - my - strange dogs which means that they are developing into nice stable, balanced dogs. They are used to running on grass, concrete, pebbles, no matter what, it doesn't bother them. They are used to noise and sounds they do no know, they are not scared but inquisite to find out what it is and where it came from.

This is just a little fraction of the little tests I do with puppies to see how are they developing and I can only say that the owner of this litter has done for so far already a very good job.

And they look great!

If you want info concirning pricing, you can away's send a pm to Belgiank

Thanks

I was concerned when we brought our five dogs out of the damp and chilly UK temperatures to this tropical island but was assured by my UK vet that, as it is rarely much hotter than the hottest British day, they would adapt quickly. Indeed, even the long/ full coated ones find their cooler spots in the shade and enjoy cooling off in water and their coats moult accordingly.

I suppose that if it is possible to have happy tigers from Siberia, polar bears from the Arctic circle and pandas from the high, cold and damp areas of China survive well and happily in different climates, then our dogs will fare well also.

I have a golden crossed with a Marema Sheep Dog, very similar to the Great Pyranese. He has done fine. he has lost his undercoat over the last two years and swims in the pool or ocean regularily to keep coo.. I would love one of these pups!

They are great looking dogs, they have to be since they are fierce guard dogs of lifestock, originally bred for that and not lost many of those qualities over generations.

They are still used these day's to do that job, looking out over the herds in the mountains and not afraid to go into confrontation with a hungry pack of wolves. They usualy do it in packs of 3 or 4 of which one is the oldest alfa but like some other rases they do not fight for leadership. The oldest is the leader until he is too old to continue and the next strong one will automatically take his leadersposition for the whole group without any confrontation. They know they are strong and big but they are also very smart and social towards each other and know that together they stand still stronger.

Their coat is full but at the same time very fluffy, excellent isolation for cold and heat (can be hot in the mountains too you know) and its a low maintenance coat if you are not bothered by the fact that the white will turn into yellow once in a while.

Acira, we may be interested in one of these puppies but won't be back until September.

Will you please PM me with the price ?
We can talk about the details later.

Thank you

Thanks all for the info...we are bringing a very full coated Pomeranian to DR from Canada and I was quite concerned about how he would cope with the heat. You've put my worries to rest!

belgiank, why is it against everything you believe in?

Since we arrived here, and were known as professional trainers and breeders, people have approached us with their puppies, and asked for our help to sell them...

I have always oposed and fought this in Belgium, and will continue to do so in the DR...

If I would try to "help" these people, I would quickly gain the "rep" of being handy in selling pups and making easy money for the breeder... and therefore encouraging wild breeding...

As a breeder and lover of dogs... I uphold two rules... either you breed dogs of a certain breed (race) in order to maintain the original breed-standard (and no... I do not believe in improving it... nature knew what it did when it established the race), or you adopt a stray, mix, beach dog, poubelle (garbage dog in french), and give it a good home....

So, everybody who just breeds to make money, will be discouraged by me...

And to be ahead of all comments... yes, we breed Malinois and Aussie's... and yes, we make some money out of that breeding program.... but, we also are very picky about future owners, we are very carefull in selecting the breeding mates, at considerable expense, to remain in the breeding standard, and to breed pups of the highest quality...

This Dominican guy loves his dogs, takes care of them in a manner I have known few people (regardless of country) to do so... and is looking for a good home for them... and therefore he gained my support...

As far as breed, coat, etc... and the heat of the DR are concerned... I can only say that most dogs adapt themselves perfectly... we have friends here with a couple of huskies, and they are perfectly happy over here, same for a russian terrier, etc...

Of course we own the exception to the rule, which is our border collie, Gray, with an exceptional thick coat, and suffering from the heat... therefore our jacuzzi is a blissfull island of blue water, with some gray/white/black/tan animal floating around most of the time (blue merle BC)

Thank you for spelling it out - it would not have been obvious to most posters. My guess would have been the climate issue.
