Are you asking or just informing"?

A batey is a Taino word for living area and has come to mean quarters for sugarcane workers. Some of these have become small towns!

And, as the video says refers to any living quarters for certain groups. One fellow mentioned Japanese and Puerto Ricans imported by Trujillo for certain tasks.

Lots of confusion and ignorance and incredible emphasis on race.

Informing. As a cultural document, this video is amazing. I love to hear people's perceptions. The fellow who mentioned the Japanese was very diplomatic.

The interviews were done at this year's Polo coffee festival (lots of familiar faces there!) so the contributions were from a more tolerant sector of society, compared to what they would have got had they really gone out on the streets of a town or city. Most of the interviewees were from NGOs, campesino organisations etc.
