I posted on here before twice. It was regarding going down to the Dominican Republic and wanting to meet a girl.I had heard much about it from Dominican friends.About how fun it was and how I could even find a wife.So I flew down there recently to finally see for myself. From the airport I took a taxi to Boca Chica.Big mistake. The town seemed abandoned and very dangerous.I was there not even 3 hours and left.In Santo Domingo I saw very few tourists,if any, and it was not what I thought. The vibes I got were almost depressing.
Yes I speak Spanish. And have traveled to many parts of the world. But I cut my trip after two days and flew back to the U.S. (Just took the loss). So can someone tell me,are Puerto Plata and Sosua the places to go?Are they safe, the vibe actually fun.I would try again actually. To make up for this lost "vacation".Thanks for any ideas.

Sosua is to Boca Chica like Las Vegas is to Atlantic City.

Santo Domingo is a major Capital city - like all capital cities there is fun to be had but you are not going to find it in one day unless you get the DR1 guide or have some friends there.

Puerto Plata is a small provincial town where again, you need to know where the hot spots are.

Looking for a wife?
In your own neighborhood would be best.
For a "wife experience" then talk to AZB about what to avoid and then do exactly the opposite.
As he will tell you, no good will come of it but you will certainly have something to talk about afterward.

2 days is not enough to get an impression of the D.R.
2 years is not really enough time.

And if you are scared by the rats in Boca Chica then you need to toughen up!

Best advice I heard all day!!

Stick to your own backyard is what I say for love.;)

Leave the DR for one off excitement.

Whose to say you might get lucky but I would leave that for the casinos.

Most of the posters on this board.....(Calm down....NOT EVERYONE)..... wouldn't touch your post with a 10 foot pole......Don't take this the wrong way or anything......But you come off as totally hopeless(Yes it does show)........Relax it's called constructive criticism.....(Who flys home EARLY?) .....Sounds like you made the wrong choice....(But hey.....How many people get it right the first time??).....This Island is not for everyone......Boca Chica is not for the MEEK.........I personally love it .......But hey (I love to eat Orange peels too)..........PP is good ....Sosua can be REALLY GOOD............But like anything else you gotta know what your doin.........My advice......... Don't give up........It will get better......Hang in there.......There's tons of info on this board.............I have been going for about 15 Yrs now....probably 70 times or so.........I have seen the whole Island..(pretty much)....And I also lived there for about a Yr.... There are people on this board who know a lot more than me.....I would listen to what they have to say And then make your own decision.......It hasn't been perfect............But it has been an incredible experience..........And the best part is .............It's not over yet!!!!!!............If you need any specific info.....PM me and I will do my best to help you.............And if I can't help you.....Hopefully I can point you in the right direction.

if you think boca chica is dangerous, you might not used to third world environment. you might want to stay in first world country because sosua is not much different from boca chica.

Boca Chica and Sosua are both known as places where there are more than a few prostitutes, but other than that they are nothing alike...

To the OP...a few hours in BC and a couple of days in SD "looking for love (in presumably) all the wrong places" won't give you even a sense of the real Dominican Republic....if you really want to give it another try here, spend some time searching the archives here and ask some specific questions...with the right planning (and expectations), just about anyone can have a great time here...

Ding Dong! DR Reality Check

Firstly, I FULLY appreciate your freaked out reaction to SD & Boca Chica. I have also spent $1,500 on a flight to a country and departed within days with disgust.

1. Do your RESEARCH!
2. Do NOT expect Paradise in a hell hole city worse than Caracas.
3. Do NOT come here for chicas to marry -- they are ALL for sale with mileage and more.
4. Determine your objective: Hos in a dangerous polluted party town or party town or a safe, quiet beach town with tranquil turquoise waters.

The majority of single males come here for cheap Hos and drugs. The North, Sosua and Puerto Plata is akin to Haiti. On the first day I arrived in Sosua, I was walking to the grocery store, and a rambo jumped out of his pickup with guns ablazing on a woman with kids who were apparently tailgating him. I fled to the protection of the trees along with other women. And FLED the next day.

It entirely depends on what you are looking for. If you are budgeter, seeking non-stop Hos, drugs and nightlife -- welcome to paradise in the cities and the North. If you have money and are seeking surreal beaches and tranquility, head to Punta Cana.

Angelfish, we are happy for you that you have returned safely to your home country. Please, next time book trip to Bellagio in Las Vegas, have the Humvee with 3 bodyguards awaiting you at the airport so nothing happens on the way to your hotel. You will find Las Vegas a good party town made for your liking. Please leave the DR to others, who "enjoy" being in such a "dangerous" place.

Man, you have probably not even seen even from far away La Venezuela or Piantini/Naco area on Saturday night e.g. 11 pm. But, your loss is another one's gain.

I hope AZB doesn't suddenly "stop short" and your nose gets buried. :surprised

:tired:

Actually, sadly, I as a Dominican would vouch AZB as one of the best guides as how to find a Dominican "wife" regardless of how he delivers his message. His problem is not the message, but how he delivers. If he could stop offending people left and right, just talk a little bit softer, he will be giving the most sharpest advices in the DR with no competition.

If you want to find a wife then hed to thailand or vietnem ad head inland. Boca chics has loads of womenfor sale and zero oportunities for findinh love, some with Sosua.
\|From your post it seems that you are getting to s certain age and are now looking to the trophy wife (personally I think this looks chesp snd tacky, seeing an onler guy walking down the steet with a girl old enough to be his grsnd dsughter. You will find thst without any problem at all. Just approach a good looking girl, have s one night somewhere (not your apartment) snf oif hsppy snf comfortsble enough then tell her to move in with you see how it goes. If you wake up and nothing mis missing then they have done well.
s\\anto dominigo id much hsrder work as we don't have 1/10th of the attractive girls they have on th northcoast.
Haitians are best, as far as trust goes goes in my experience, they clean the apartment every day, always foo to stay happier and they are 10times better in the sac. But always be aware, it will take you months to train them not to try anf sve one over on you. As for marriage, then \i'd stick to home, all girls you will meet in Boca (sh1thole) and \sosua (lovely little town but still a disaster zone to navigate yourself without assisance, all have hidden aganders and will rob you, set you up and get you in trouble quicker then you can imagine.
\\\\\\\\\\if you are looking to get married then hea to the hills and find s fresh cherry, you will get more repect snd she ususlly only want what you can give her.

Boca Chica is dangerous??? ROTFLMFAO!!! Whatever man. Banff National Park is more dangerous... might get eaten by a Grizzly Bear!

Seriously though, you can't expect to just fly somewhere on a whim with whatever expectations you have in your head and hope they all come true. Boca Chica's a shady, seedy place. A minute's reserach on any search engine will tell you this. But dangerous? Please. Let me introduce you to San Carlos or La Pina in Los Alcarrizos... When you step over a few dead bodies with bullet holes in the head, then come talk to me about dangerous.

Here's my advice on an ultra-serious note. Get your Dominican friends to go with you, or hook you up with their family down there so that you have a local show you what the real DR is all about. Of course there's no tourists in Santo Domingo... exactly why I love it so much. I can't stand the North because you can't take two steps without tripping over some tourist. Santo Domingo is an amazing city with lots to offer. And yes, you can find a wife there is you approach it properly - like using your network of trusted Dominican friends to help you find a good girl with solid family values. I can attest to this. I'm an average 32 year old Canadian guy living in Toronto who has taken the time to get to know the DR very well. My passport is so full of DR stamps that I'm gonna have to renew it shortly - I'm running out of pages. I lived there most of 2009 and even worked in a call center (ie, sweatshop). Yo aprendi espanol en la calle alla y tamien hablo DOMINICANO. The DR is what you make of it... paradise or hell. I chose the latter and I'm thoroughly IN LOVE with the DR, its people, its culture, and its language. That was all BEFORE I met my wife. :)

If you go back, go with someone who's from there or stay with family of a friend of yours. They'll know where to take you. And I suspect your view would be forever altered... in a POSITIVE way. Good luck. Sorry for laughing, but you kinda did bring that upon yourself.

What a shame!

If you had done your homework you would have instead took a bus and traveled the DR.

That's how I got to know the DR back in the early 90's, and I don't speak Spanish.
Heck, I even got a couple pen pals from Cosmopolitan (Spanish Edition) before I came here and traveled the country to meet them.

You had a perfect opportunity for adventure and blew it away.

I would have loved to know how to speak Spanish when I first came here.
That did not stop me from exploring the various cities on my own.
I hope you are more adventurous next time, live a little.

Hard to believe you speak Spanish and were at a total loss in the DR.
Opportunity knocking and you did not open the door!

What a shame!

Actually we shouldn't be so hard on the OP. The first time I went to DR I did the exact same trip- SD and Boca Chica. He probably would've been better going to Punta Cana where IMO is not an accurate representation of DR. I mean based on what friends have told me that go to AI's the staff there begs them not to leave for fear of their lives and they stay isolated from the actual people which is boring.

I think Santo Domingo and Juan Dolio- Boca Chica are the best duo. It is so much fun hanging out in barrios, drinking at the colmado's and just doing nothing but relaxing at times. My life in the US is so hectic, until recently it used to be work school gym nonstop.

What I like about Dominicans is that they simply enjoy life. All around SD and even BC you will just see people sitting around sometimes not doing anything but they look content. There seems to be more sense of community there and I like that. I can totally understand how SD wouldn't be for most people b/c you have to find the fun, it certainly won't find you!

I sometimes wonder what DR these posters are talking about. Maybe they are going to the one in Bizzaro World? Because in 6 years of traveling to Dr, I have yet to find the type of place they describe.
