this morning the Diario Libre headlined a study done five years ago about a geological phenomena called a "Megasplay" off the South Coast of the DR, quite similar to one off the coast of Japan at Nankai.

The thing is, the article does not really say or define what a Megasplay is, but there is a link to the original article that will give you the gory details.

Basically what it says in geologist-speak is that the northern part of the Caribbean Plate is subducting (going underneath) the island of Hispaniola. As a result, while being subducted, sediments are being scraped off of the oceanic plate and added to the overriding continental plate. These so-called accretionary wedges are exposed to enormous stress that form large faults.

And these faults are what make us vulnerable to major earthquakes.

Not a lot of study has been done on this place but it seems from the illustrations in the study that it is connected to the fault line that runs through Haiti..

So, the point being is that oh, five years ago, the geniuses of the PLD buddies wanted to put up an artificial island right on top of this!! With apartment towers and residences...the whole big deal...

Now aren't you glad they didn't get away with it????

We are so innocent of what is under the sea...

But all each of us really has is today. May happen or may not. Let it be a lesson to look at each moment at your last. Might change the way you live.

Might be an Earthquake or might be a car accident. We never know.

Quakes are absolutely nothing Rare for the Island.
below is the short list of the measured Earthquakes from the last weeks.
we have nearly a Dozen 5's per month as the usual thingy.
Data is from the Peurto Rican Seismografic Network,
measuring what we have here on the Eastern Shore, which is the Islands Smooth Side, the Hardcore Areas are on the more Westerly Soil of this Country.

Live each day like its your last.

Doom scenario's :

Yellow Stone park mega crater, way overdue to wake up
Crater on one of the Canarian Islands should shift half of its crater (due to happen any day now) into the ocean which would send a tsunami towards the coast of NY and wipe that whole coast away.
Isn't their one of the zillion meteoriets that float around in space heading our planets way to wipe everything out? There is just a tiny bit of space we are watching right now.

Since I'm two short blocks to the Atlantic Ocean on a little barrier island off New Jersey..... ACK!

Might be time to put out the For Sale sign and move to a mountain in North Carolina.... or San Jose de Ocoa..... [Just to keep it DR related]
