My first time with a pig

I think we our all used to seeing roaming cattle,roosters,sheep/goat like things,horses and donkeys......today I saw scavanging pigglets, has anyone else seen pigs gone wild.

I would have thought they would be a valuable thing to allow to wander wild and possibly not the best creatures at finding their way home if in fact they belonged to anyone.

They wander on to our property all the time, my husband has a fit because they eat whatever you've planted. More than a few 'discussions' with their owners. In the campo they wander freely and then go home, sometimes the mama has the babies close behind.

Given the opportunity, piglets like all young animals will take the opportunity to explore but, when its tea time or something goes wrong, they will soon run back to Mummy!

I am surprised that after all that damage done to your property and discussions with the owner who had done nothing in that regard to educate his pigs, one of those piggies had not yet "accidentally got lost and disappeared" on or near your property... ;)

LOL Rubio, the thought has crossed our minds. I hear that some of the wandering chickens have ended up in a pot when my suegra is there :cheeky:

Of course, the fault is partially ours, because sometimes we leave our gate open.

Since they have started building a new house further down the street (wow! a second house on the block! lol) there is a night guard and of course he has a chicken and a rooster.
The rooster passes every day our gate and this morning he was very bold and jump up the gate just in front of our border collie.
Luckely she was so surprised of the boldness of the rooster, she just backed of...not sure what she will do next time :cheeky:

I would make it part of their basic Training to leave Roosters/Chicken/Dugs in Peace, doesn't matter that You think they are Trespassing your property.
a Rooster has for a poor Dominican Watchman a huge Value, he is proud on that thingy.
he is not any kinda educated Person,
don't await Him to think about actions/activities.
the moment his Rooster get's bitten, he is on his way to the Colado to get Fiao for the needed incredients.

Chickes are more highly prized than dogs by most by the non-elite class. That is until dogs lay free eggs and provide meat.

I'm amazed by the loving care many chickens get, not to mention the fighting cocks.

Much appreciated your warning Mike. Our dogs do not chase chickens, roosters or rabbits or anything that size, just cows and horses and those guy's don't mind since it makes their job easier to get the cows and horses sooner with them ;)

We talked already to the lady who is the owner of the house, she will provide the guard with the necessary wire to make a little pen for the rooster and his hen and if she doesn't, we have some spare wire we can give the guard.

Better be safe for sure.

I'm sure there are still plenty of wild pigs in the DR even after the massacre of the 1980s. They are good at escaping from pens and given their ability to breed there are bound to be wild litters here and there. I would be a bit concerned that the sow might be nearby and none too keen on someone getting near her piglets. A half dozen 5 pound piggies is one thing, a 250-350 pound hungry feral pig is quite another. They get much bigger on the farms.

There are more wild pigs in the US than there are black bears, and more are killed for sport in Florida each than deer are. They do well in warm wooded areas. The Hispaniola population of pigs have been around since the times of Columbus. Sailors would leave pigs and goats on any island when they had a surplus to be used as a larder as the populations grew. The pigs helped spread malaria, dengue and yellow fever because they would dig wallowing holes and provide breeding pools for the mosquitoes.

Yep, especial the gamecocks. They hire trainers for them, give them special food and even put them on little tread mills. It can be a big investment. A visit to a cockfight is quite an experience and there is a lot of money being passed around there. The funny thing is the ring has padding all around the edges so the roosters don't hurt themselves if they bump into it.
