Medical emergency flight required to UK for Mr. WB

Desperately need urgent flight to UK - all normal routes seem to be fully booked until at least 21st August which is far too long as Mr. WB's lung is filling with fluid and, by then, he may well not be fit to fly...

Our only other option would be to wait at the airport for a number of hours to see if there are any 'no shows' on the Thomson or Thomas Cook flights but this really is very undesirable under current circumstances.

We know there are people, like us, who buy a return ticket to DR but do not intend to go back on the return flight - we just need to know as to whether it is worth going to wait at POP or elsewhere to hopefully buy a stand-by ticket - can anyone please let us know if you know of a seat available. Preference is from POP to Glasgow on Sunday but anything considered.

Thanks everyone!

Sorry to hear about Mr. WB :(

What about scheduled flights? You have lots of options.
Via New York, Miami, Paris, Madrid etc.

I know it's more hassle, but it's assured and he could be there Friday.

Sending prayers and positive thoughts to you and your husband, please keep us posted.

Possibly someone with a return ticket might consider switching flights with you so he can get there a/s/a/p on a direct flight, I know time is of the essence when one is very ill.

Please let me know, Whirleybird, if there is anything I can do to help. I could sit at the airport for you to see if there are seats. I would give you a lift to the airport. Anything. Let me know!

Sorry to hear about WB. Can't even get you into Newcastle, at least that would only give you a 2 hour drive once in UK.
Upside, I have flown back on standby 3 times from POP and haven't been let down yet so it might be worth a go. I turned up early, let the boss at check in know I really needed to be back. Was told others had turned up expecting the same, but I would be confident that in your circumstances you would get first dibs on any seats going (I'd be confident). I think it would be worth the hanging around for a few hours and making it obvious how desperate you are.
Good luck, sorry I can't be of more use.

second thought... does your medical insurance in the UK not cover a medical flight repatriation? With fluid in the lungs this would certainly be considered as a necessity.

i just checked iberia and they want 109.000 pesos for saturday flight to glasgow (via madrid and london). airfrance has a flight on thursday (via paris and amsterdam) at 72.000 pesos.
did you consider taking mr wb to homs or union medica in santiago or even to SD?

Sorry to hear about your problems, WB. But for the price of an airline ticket you can get excellent, high-tech care at HOMS until a reasonable price ticket is available.

flight seat

Due to the problem involved and the previous treatment in the UK (one which is not administered here or in the US normally), the medical teams have strongly recommended that he will better to go back to UK under previous Specialist.

The issue of having no passport, which was away being renewed, has not helped as he cannot transit via the US with the temporary emergency one.

As more fluid develops, it will become increasing stressful to fly so we are still desperately hoping for a direct route to manifest itself - God forbid that he should find himself in a strange airport and country en route.

I hope that you are able to get a flight quickly but if things goes downhill DON'T HESITATE to head over to HOMS ASAP. Have a driver or Taxi ready if necessary.

given previous tragic medical issues for others on this board, you may want to take this even more seriously than the local doctors are telling you, just to be on the safe side.

Go to the airport when there is the next flight to UK.... ask to speak to a station manager for the airline. Explain him the situation, even better if you can get a medical certificate or something similar. Ask to speak to captain of the flight. They might!!! accommodate him even if no seats are available - maybe the crew seat? You just have to go and explain everything, including the thing about replacement passport and inability to use flight via USA.

On the other hand, would you be able to fly via Canada? Considering comonwealth between Canada and UK...? There are Air Canada and charter flights form POP and Samana almost daily.

All the UK charter flights out of POP are full at the moment. Mainly due to the reduced capacity this year and the fact that the kids are now on summer hols.

If you are desperate, which it sounds like you are, look at the British Airways website. British Airways - Plan your journey
I don't know if this link will work, but I've found a flight direct from Punta Cana to Gatwick for leaving on 12th Aug or 15th Aug for USD1111 one way.

Not ideal, I know, but an option for you.

Good luck

Is the medical treatment offered in Canada?

You can go Puerto Plata to Toronto or Montreal on Fridays and Saturdays directly. On westjet or air canada (check both, one goes on fridays one on saturdays).

From Montreal or Toronto, there are directly flights to heathrow and glasgow (air canada and thomas cook and air transat).
