I tried to ask around, but didn't get a straight answer. Does anyone know if the pricing of medications is publicly available? Basic prescription medications like antibiotics, antiinflammatories, analgesics, etc.

Can anyone also recommend a pharmacy (with fair pricing) in Caberete? Thanks.

im curious about birth control. is it readily available? cheap? im assuming (and just assuming) that it's not very common in RD? In Canada, it's common and not very costly.

i dont mean to hijack this thread but thought it might fit and i was curious.

thanks!

Birth Control costs about 800 pesos a month, and available without a prescription.

i work in the pharmacy in DR.
the cost of medicine differs greatly, the same substance by a different lab willl have different price - for instance azitromicina, an antibiotic, will be 150 pesos a pill from MK and 50 pesos a pill from a dominican generic lab. just like pfizer's viagra is over 300 pesos and dominican la pela is 50.
the government sets a minimum profit for farmacias but no upper limit. therefore the same medicine from the same lab will have different price in different pharmacies.
in addition some pharmacies buy fake medicine cheaply and then sell them either a lot cheaper than other stores or sell them at normal prices and make really huge profits.
as for contraception, engineerfg has no clue what he/she is talking about save for the prescription part. contraception is widely available and popular. the cost starts at 0 if you go to salud publico (they give free condoms and contraception pills). the cheapest pill in the pharmacy is subsidized by the government and cost less than a hundred pesos for one box. the cheapest good lab pill is microgynon (schering) also below 100 pesos. yasmine, diane 35 and cilest are at 500-650 pesos.
you can also but over the counter emergency pill at 130-200 pesos, depends on a lab. the cheapest condoms will run at 15 pesos for a packet of four.
any more questions?

dominicans know where do babies come from but they have no clue how it really works :)
a gringa i know told me about a conversation she had with her dominican hubby's cousin (mother of few kids). she had no idea that women produce eggs :)
in the pharmacy men often get really upset when it turns out that contraception pills are not sold by one (like most other meds) and they get even more pi**ed off when the pill their wife told them to buy is 200 pesos. they tell me: "200 is too much, give me something cheaper."

my experience tells me that a first method of contraception used in DR is the mercy of god. hence the amount of abortion pill we sell.
method number two is oral contraception with hugely popular duofem, microgynon and triquilar.
interestingly a very popular contarception method is sterilisation. nearly all women over 30 i know (with at least 2 or more kids) are sterilized.

There's got to be a little price fixing going on like everywhere else. I have paid the same price for my meds. everywhere in the DR. The price difference is in the "Brand name".

Does anyone know where Lipitor 20mg can be purchased at a decent price.
I am currently paying 2464 D.P. for 20 pills in Santiago. Taking this for months can get very expensive.

Is it possible to purchase prescription drugs without seeing a doctor to get a prescription? For example if you have a back problem and throw it out while on holidays can you get pain meds or anti inflamatories? or antibiotics?

Have you ever tried the Zocor generic [simvastatin]? I assume it's available in DR. Doctors in the US have been switching patients off Lipitor because of the cost. By the end of this year there should be a generic Lipitor available too. For a 90 day supply of Lipitor our co-pay is $110, for simvastatin it's $0/free.

Generic 20 mg Atorvastatin for less than $1 per tablet

Better Life Pharmacy : Better Prices. Better Service. Better Rewards.

Generic Simvastatin 20 mg at about 3 tablets per $1.

That's a company in Australia with offices in Panama, there is no Lipitor generic available yet in the US. Maybe it's available in DR?? I'm kind of suspicious of it though.

According to wikipedia: With 2008 sales of US$12.4 billion, Lipitor was the top-selling branded pharmaceutical in the world.[1] US patent protection is scheduled to expire in June 2011.[2][3] However, Pfizer made an agreement with Ranbaxy Laboratories to delay the generic launch in the US until November 2011.[1]

Guess they want to suck every last nickel out of us until then.....

Prices vary widly from pharmacy to pharmacy. To answer to original question, the cheapest one in Cabarete by far, is the one at the end of Kayoba plaza. Just east of Banco Popular.

Buy the 40 mg and cut them in two. Got me off the hook for a while.

Buy 80 MG lipitor - 14 pills/package for 2000 RD
Cutting into 4 pieces with a pillcutter will yield 56 tablets.
Comes out to about 36 RD/ea or $0.98 US/ea
