I just got back home to Santiago from the States to see my family and get work and as I was a long way from Florida I had to eat typical American.

Anyway the last week or so had me thinking a lot about how much I miss rice, beans etc. so I today I had my wife make the bandera with bacalao, tostones, green salad and to top it off -avacado!

Needless to say I just finished it and I feel almost euphoric as if I imagine someone who has a drug problem has when they take their drugs.

Tonight, for the coup de grace will be the leftover bacalao with boiled plantain. Que viva la republica!

We eat a lot of rice but its quit blend here.

But two evenings ago my husband exceld himself in his cooking.
He made porkchops with rosemary and added to the plate a nice portion of rice mixed with roasted almonds and raisins and on top he made some nice caramalized apples with it.

Keep it coming my dear!! :bunny:

btw...I love beans ;)

I had something similar in Haiti but without the beans and instead had sardines and a hot sauce. It's like grits back home. Needless to say I ate a ton of it.

However, as soon as I passed the border into the DR I had to stop as soon as possible for fried porkchops, onions and boiled yucca for breakfast. :)

The ART of Cooking Rice!

xop8k3.jpg

It?s such a pain to pour a bottle of bottle water in a bowl, tear open the Knorr?s package, empty it in the bowl, place the bowl in the microwave and set the timer for 12 minutes.

?What do I do for those 12 minutes?
Besides throw away the empty bottle and the empty Knorrs package

PS: La Sirena sells these convenient packages of rice in various styles!

My stomach could never be Dominican. I love hot spicy food and that is really rare here. On trips back to the US I will never crave for food back in the DR. Well, maybe the mangoes. But then I did not come here for the food.

I like the chicken and pork and don't mind rice and beans. I was making my own rice in the US when I was about 10. Adding beans to rice? Fine with me.

Any dish made from plantains that are not maduro I will no longer eat. I give up making believe that I like it. I'd rather eat lawn clippings than tostones or mangu.

what youhave to do is what I do. When you come back to the US, you have to stock up on Grace Jamaican Pepper sauce. Dominican food isnt spicy enough and the domestic hot sauce is awful. Mostly its has too much vinegar in it and not enough pepper puree. They have Tobasco but I can do through a bottle of that a day. But man, rice and BLACK beans with chicken breast and maduros with the Grace hot sauce. Thats a party!
