I thought after living here in the DR for 3 years that nothing could possibly shock me. I was wrong.

I was in a supermarket in Sosua last week in the early evening. As I was walking to the checkout a rather large foreign gentleman was blocking my path. I said politely 'excuse me' and he ignored me continuing to move as slowly as possible, whilst his young dominican girlfriend just watched. I decided to just turn around and walk a different way.

Then I get to the checkout to find that I am again, standing behind the same guy. I stood watching for him to pay for his items. He takes out a credit card and throws it at the cashier. He then takes out a huge wod of cash (I mean, a LOT of cash) and looks through all his 1000 dollar peso bills to find a 100 peso bill. Then he takes the 100 pesos and throws it at the guy who was packing his bag and points to it with a grunt and ordered 'bags!' to a different guy.

I ask you, how utterly rude can people be!!!! I can't believe that someone can come here from a different country and treat people like this! I was just biting my tongue, stopping myself from shouting some comments to him.

I used to wonder why some Dominicans have a bad attitude towards foreigners.....now I know why with people like this walking around!!!

Haven't been to DR yet, but that happens all over the world. I was in Djibouti and the French there treated the Djiboutians, Somalis and Ethiopians like crap. Some people with money are just rude in general...

majority of the check out staff are pretty rude on the whole.....note to super super staff - deal with customer first then carry out conversation with other staff (that bugs me)

Should have tripped his fat a$$. or pushed him out of the way. Sometimes you have to be a little meaner and more rude to straighten people like that out. I love my NYC upbringing.

He'll get his due when he gets robbed, set up by his chica in cahoots with her chulo, who no doubt already knows this guy is stupid with his money the way he flashes it.

He'll get no justice from the police, who I'm sure will get paid off very well from the proceeds.

Not that I wish a robbery on anyone, but that's what he's asking for by pulling out a wad of cash every time he's out paying for something.

So, the NYC way of dealing with any problem is by being meaner and ruder than anyone else.

That really helps me to more fully understand New Yorkers...and more fully appreciate my formerly irrational intense dislike of that town.

Seriously, boorish behavior is everywhere, not just in DR. The world - both actual and virtual - is full of people who have little regard for others, and actually revel in exploiting the less fortunate.

Santiago DR
I drove a car here in Santiago about a week ago, I was asked to by a good friend.
I was driving in the downtown area, driving in a way that I would call "normal and safe"
After only 5 minutes I hear someone scream from behind me in good English...
Why don't you learn how to drive.......
I guess he wanted me to run over the girl crossing the street in front of me.
SO stupid...

Where and how does one learn to be mean like that? I want to become this way. Should I go to NY or just take some self-defence courses? I really want to avoid being nice anymore and remove myself from harassment.

You're going to need the proper attire, you don't want people being rude to YOU.......and of course by wearing an English tee shirt....(WTF does that say?..lol) in a Spanish speaking country, you would be perceived as being RUDE.........so this might be the way to go, lol.....hey it's a start............:cheeky:

Im sorry but if I am being polite and saying excuse me to try to get by someone, even if they dont speak English or spanish (Politeness is understood world wide) and they just ignore me trying to pass in a polite way I am going to knock this a$$hole on his a$$ because he is truly an a$$hole and deserves it. I am very polite at all times but I really can;t stand people like the person described above.
