The DR has dental tourism - costs are about 20-30% of the US. I have had crowns, an inlay and fillings, and the Dr was just as good as my old Drs in the US.

Scaling done in a medical spa in Santiago by a great periodontist: RD$18,000
Replacing old fillings: RD$1,200 each.

For a molar crown, their specialist asked for US$1,000, or $850 for porcelain fused to metal. Needless to say, I'm getting it done in Sosua for $330.

I could not agree more, as this dental scam with their prices is absurd.

The difference in price is the cleanliness of their office or so they proclaim.

With hydrogen peroxide you can sew yourself up like Rambo but you don't get the June Jabobs Cucumber Faical Bar!

That's a must!

out of curiosity... how much for implants?

As an optometrist by training, I have not been impressed by the services offered here... but I may have seen the wrong places...

I have noticed that dentist pricing in SD varies alot, although still far better priced then USA/Canada, for most things.
I have also stumbled across a Dominican girl who has started a mobile teeth whitening service in SD and the pricing was much cheaper than in my dentists office, with same procedure with lights etc. I believe she only uses dentistS and dental students with experience to do treatments. I think i still have her card somewhere, if you want PM me.

You have. There are MANY very credible optometry offices.

There are several opthamologists in Santiago that offer LASIK inexpensively. Cataracs can be done for around US$1000.

There are excellent dentists all over, including mi esposas sister in Santiago. Last week I had a crown repaired and cleaning done for RD$1500 in clean, modern surroundings with all the professional care one could ask.

Medical care here can be excellent if you search around.

What bothers me most is that you can't call a dentist office and ask for a price. I called several prices asking for the price of a molar crown, always to hear "you have to come and see the doctor; he handles that and is the only one who can tell you the price." Fine, but just give me a range for the price of a crown. No. I guess doctors need to see your face first to figure out how much they can charge you. I'm Hispanic and do pretty well with getting a decent price (never a Dominican price of course!) but if my gringo husband is with me.... I lose.

I was once in the office of an ophthalmologist in Santiago. He got a phone call which of course, he answered despite us being in the office. He told this person that for a check-up visit, since he was local, he couldn't charge him much, just $500. He charged me $2,500 for the same.

I don't know how much they charge for an implant. I know that in the US the cost is US$2,500 (just for the implant, the crown is separate).

I did ask in my country though and was asked $800. It may serve you as a frame of reference. It shouldn't cost more than that. For what I've seen, the cost of dental work in Uruguay is quite similar to the DR's.

Lasik

I had Lasik done in the US several years ago. I will need to have it redone but would NOT do it here or in any developing country. The Lasik machines are expensive and you are not going to find state-of-the-art Lasik treatments here.

In fact, a bit different subject, a plastic surgeon I saw in Santiago a while ago recommend Laser treatment for a skin problem I have but he said NOT to do it here. That Laser machines are all different (i.e., different machines for different purposes). Because they're so expensive, any doctor that brings one here uses it for ALL purposes regardless of what's best suited for.

I know that there are some excellent doctors in DR, but my mother-in-law [Santo Domingo] refused to have her cataract surgery there after some pretty bad results that some of her relatives had. She came and had them done on Long Island.

One has to be careful selecting both physicians and facilities here.

But there are some excellent examples of both, some physicians trained in excellent First World programs.

Beyond some cutting-edge mega advanced semi-experimental last-ditch therapies, there are few procedures here I would not consider having done.

The technical world has changed so much that even developing nations can offer outstanding services.

Visit Instituto EspailLat Cabral in Santo Domingo. They have modern equipment.
