I?m comming down to SD in a week, going to stay a litle bit over 3 months. What kind of clothes should I bring. I?m thinking to bring jeans, t-shirts, shorts and a few long sleved shirts. Anything else I need? Is it comming among young people (18-30) to go out partying wearing a suit, or would I be "overdressed" wearing that? Don?t want to look to stiff either.

I?m asking because frankly, I don?t know much about dominican dress codes...

Smart/casual for the city, including light jackets for some air-conditioned premises like restaurants, clubs. T-shirts, shorts etc for wearing round the house and for when you go to the beach.

A little more serious:
Jeans and T-shirts (designer T-shirts) are good for going clubbing.
For some restaurants maybe a jacket.

Short sleeved shirts are good for parties and clubs

Khakies are good.

Shoes (socks optional)

Shorts and flipflops are for the beach or in your house.

make sure to bring pants other than jeans, khakis will suffice, and a belt so that when you tuck your shirt in you don't look like you can't afford one.........leather shoes that can be polished, unless suede, no one leaves the house, no matter how poor, without shiny shoes, shirt tucked in and pressed/ironed. you may meet some middle to upper class dominicans since you are a foreigner and be invited places, homes, jeans don't cut it, sorry, also bring a necktie. it also won't hurt if you have the little polo player on your shirt. i went to a new years concert at the jaragua hotel to see tono rosario, who at the time had blond dreadlocks and wore floor length dresses. i was wearing dockers and a nice silk shirt, half the crowd was wearing suits and ties...............

If you are a guy: want to be "con el flow" bring designer jeans (just plain jeans won't do) they must be exceptional, bring T-shirts -designer (again)- or super-nice short sleeve shirts (not dress short sleeve shirts), belt with nice big buckle... I used to be the "business casual" style type... then I got some advice from gals and I changed my style when going out... the difference (in all aspects) is incredible. I am 29...so obviously this won't fit for a 50 year old guy.

Forget what you know from USA or Europe. This is DR and it has its "rules".

Thanks for some good input. I?m as we speak packing my suitcase. I?m a male by the way. Will take one striped suit and one pair of black suit-trousers in addition to jeans. And of-course shorts and tank tops for the beach.
