Waikiki beach is nice to see, good hotels and nice to watch the people but its as its already said here, its quite artificial and quite busy. The whole of Hawaii disappointed me, nothing authentic about it anymore except for the nature and the volcano's,

Punta Cana definitely!

Paradisus??

Punta Cana hands down. For it to cost over $6,000..... my first thought was Paradisus, but that's not adults only. Do you recall what property they won?

I lived in Waikiki for 2 years and loved it.

I have not been to Punta Cana but Hawaii is much better than the DR and I really enjoy the commercialism but if you drive up to the North Shore and visit small towns like Haleiwa you will forget, but will enjoy the fact that you are still in America.

The only adults only hotels in Punta Cana are -

Secrets Santuary - Cap Cana

Excellence Punta Cana - Uvero Alto

Zoetry - Uvero Alto

I'm curious.

Why are these hotels labeled "adults only"?

No kids allowed and/or adult activities? Swingers? lol (what a mind I have)

I have stayed in Punta Cana but have stayed only in The Cortecito Hotel or in Higuey with a girlfriend I had.

Pretty much just no kids allowed. The idea is to provide a romantic atmosphere for couples to enjoy or singles to hook up without the distraction of children.

Apples and Oranges - I've been to Hawaii 5 times with the shortest stay 3 weeks. These were working vacations. wiamea Falls, the Polynesian culture center, Hanauma Bay for snorkeling, and great restaurants, and Kona Coffee(great) . I'm going to Punta Cana for the first time in September so then I'll be able to compare. From what I've seen in my 10 years of going to the DR, there is no place like Hanauma bay for snorkeling and Hawaii is generally cleaner, but is more expensive and the natives outside the resorts are not as friendly. Pearl Harbour Navy exchange has the best prices I've ever seen for dive equipment, cameras....etc.

IMO, they are not comparable but I was very disappointed in Waikiki Beach, and Hawaii overall. They do offer very different vacations but not worth the distance either. Its unlikely I would ever venture back to Hawaii...but hey, different strokes for different folks.

waikiki itself was shall we say a busy bustling city with a fairly nice beach, not like I imagined, but the island as a whole was a very nice place to explore from my base in waikiki (the hotel I was in had seen better days and backed onto a smelly canal)

I havent been to punta cana so i can not comment on differences or similarities

No they are just no children allowed, Over 21?s only. Allthough i think a Hedonism or something like that would really work here.

The best places in Hawaii are not the commercialized beaches. Maui is a beautiful place which I would prefer to Punta Cana and many other places any time. But, I would rather go to Punta Cana than Waikiki.

I stayed at Paradisus with my Mom and my 10 year old son. There were a lot of kids. There are "Adults only" hotels in Punta Cana for those couples who don't have children and don't like noise. My friends go there all the time.

I can think of two reasons why a one week vacation in Punta Cana is more expensive than a one week vacation in Waikiki.

1) Most hotels in Punta Cana are All-Inclusive (free food and drinks), while most hotels in Waikiki are not. I believe there are less than a handful of All-Inclusives in Oahu and I am pretty sure that the Marriott is not one of those hotels.

2) 'Jeopardy!' is taped in Culver City, California. I can only assume that the tickets are for flights departing from LAX in Los Angeles. Not only is Los Angeles closer to Hawaii than The Dominican Republic, but the flight to Honolulu is cheaper.

I've lived in the DR for 8 years and haven't been to Punta Cana.

I spent 6 months on the big island of Hawaii many moons ago and Hawaii is much more than Waikiki on the much smaller island of Oahu.

Similarly the DR is much more than one AI in Punta Cana, or A-1 as the OP put it. ;)

Maybe the Paradicus Punta Cana or Paradicus Palma Real has an adults only section like some of the hotels, In fact i would bet the Paradicus Palma Real has as its up there with regards to price.

We stayed in Paradicus Palma Real the Reserve which is the most private area of the resort. It has kids' care center and the kids' pool right in the middle. It is a family resort. Excellence Punta Cana is where my friends go without kids. I think it is for adults only or has "adults only" areas.
