Can anyone out there give me some info on these towns? I have been reading a lot about them but I hear mixed reviews. Some say Sosua has a lot of pushy prostitutes and is not safe for women. Any info would be great. My husband and I want to visit Sosua and maybe invest in a vacation condo. I want to be able to walk and explore and become friendly with the locals. I know a little Spanish. Thanks

my friend and i stayed in sosua for 3 months and didnt have one single problem.. we're both mid 20somethings... my parents also visited and they had no problems either... however, they didnt really enjoy it there. said there was nothing to do. all depends what you're looking for i guess! cabarete and sosua both have great beaches with restaurants. the vibe i got in cabarete is definitely surfer/water sports vibe. apparently the beach is really nice at night (in sosua the beach at night was a no no for me)

i myself love sosua! heading back in a couple weeks :)

Both

They really are so close together (5-10 min) why not both.

Sosua does have many "working girls" but they usually don't bother you unless you want to be bothered lol.

Many expats living there

Cabarete definitely more surfer vibe, more international crowd and more expensive but like I said they are so close you can switch between them if you don't like one.

I have friends that live in sosua (cheaper rent) go to cabarete during day to surf, watersports etc, then back to sosua to party or stay in cabarete to party but for a couple I would probably recommend cabarete night life.

April nice to see you on the board. You will find a bigger expat community in the Sosua area (still lots of expats in Cabarete as well). There are "ladies of the evening" in both places but much more open in Sosua. However mostly concentrated along a certain area and certainly do not bother you if you are not "looking". We have dinner a couple of times a week in Sosua and never had a problem. Most of the "ligit" places (restaurants) do not let unescorted "workers" in. The two beaches in Sosua are some of the nicest around with usually very flat (no big waves) clear water. Our home is actually between the two but much closer to Sosua.
Cabarete is a younger sports minded town wtih lots of "surfer dudes"" and such. the beach is beautiful as well, with lots of waves. Great Kite boarding, wind surfing and swiming. It also has lots of beachside restaurants and bars that become clubs after the dinner hour.
If you have other questions let me know (email)

The working girls will certainly not bother you in Sosua or Cabarette, April. They are much more interested in the men, and they are only interested in those who are interested in them. They don't have the time to waste on "blind calls".

Both towns have their own unique qualities, and you would have to decide for yourself which one suits you. Try them both on for size, and make up your own mind. It is only about a 15-minute drive between the two towns.

You have to use common sense and normal precautions, of course, but I wouldn't say that it is "not safe". I think most people would agree that it's actually safer here for women than in many North American cities. And the prostitutes certainly won't be pushy to you!
