I out did myself this week with a combination that works.

I make a Fresh Green Bean Salad with Red Peppers and Onions combined with an Asian Sesame and Ginger Vinagrette from Whishbone Sald dressing

I go to Charamicos and buy the Chinese lunch and save the rice and veggies as they give you enough food to feed very many people.

With the left over lobster and salad I made a fried rice dish and Wow that was as good as catching a Grouper!

We need new recipes in Sosua!

But people like frozen french fries.......

Speaking of French Fries, one of these days someone is going to start selling Poutine. I've never had it, but Canadians get all misty-eyed talking about it. Someone selling that for 100 and 200 pesos late at night could make some serious money.

Hey great idea, set up a Poutine stand across the street from Pedro McMurray's, where that chicken kabob guy was!

They have hooch in D.R. - I do not know what it is called - Clarin, the Haitians call it.

I know this because one night a friend bought some to put in a paraffin lamp when all the shops were closed.
It worked OK once it was going but had a strange green light - which I took to mean that you should never drink it!

Nothing that burns green can be good for you!

But it was Dominican moonshine all the same.

Hi everyone,5 or 6 years ago, there was a Canadian woman selling poutine on Sosua beach.I never went to her place so I dont know exacly where it was.She would comment that Canadian tourists would see her sign and the husband would say (look, they have poutine ) and the wife would say (we have that home, let's find something else).
So,before you invest any money on a poutine stand,do some research. I think that Canadians wont eat it while on vacation and anyone else wont taste it because of what it looks like.

love it

poutine is a very quick, easy to make, great tastin meal....there is a cafe on the main blvd that makes it and i heard there was a place on the beach...

every friend i've shown poutine to has developed a liking for it...

a cart out on the blvd at night would start off slow...
but give it time and word of mouth would spread :)

one taste is all you need :)

I think more than anything else it needs a name change. "Poutine" does not conjure up fries with gravy and melted cheese to someone who has not heard of it. To an American, anything French-sounding is definitely expensive and even worse, possibly healthy. A big seller in US chains is what is called "Loaded Fries," which is fries with nacho cheese sauce, minced bacon, scallions, and topped off with some sour cream.

Probably the most popular Dominican food sold from street stands is Yaroa...which sounds very similar to Poutine, although I'm sure tastes very different, So I bet a poutine stand could have a chance here...Yaroa is french fries (or sweet plaintains) covered in ground beef and cheese...unfortunately instead of tasty gravy, they use ketchup and mayo...

Ive never had poutine, but isn't it made with cheese curds, not regular (i.e. mozzarella) cheese?

I think a poutine stand would do great late at night on Pedro Clisante in Sosua outside of the clubs. Forget the tourists - tap into the local market. All the Dominicans I know in Toronto LOVE poutine when they try it so I'm sure the Dominicans back home would have a taste for it too! Also, poutine is not poutine with shredded cheese - you need to put white cheese curd on top of the french fries and then pour gravy over the top to melt it all. Yum yum!

@Rice and Beans

Those are nachos made with corn chips. When I made them in the DR I used a half can of Campbell's Cheddar Cheese soup heated in the microwave for the cheese sauce then topped it with some homemade pico de gallo salsa. Some balk at not using real cheese, but I hate how it turns into a big greasy lump if you don't eat it fast enough. Restaurants often use a cheese sauce too because it's easy to forget about nachos in an oven or under a broiler.

I hate to say it, but Applebees makes a pretty good nacho in the US.

Gravy

what do we mean when we say gravy ?

In French Canadian cooking, gravy begins with meat grease (usually beef), to which is added flour and seasoning to create a roux. The roux is well-blended with water over heat to create a sauce that is called gravy.

In the southeastern United States, from which I come, the gravy will also include a bit of milk.

In the northeastern United States, Americans of Italian heritage call gravy the tomato-based sauce used over pasta. Everyone else in the world, including Italians in Italy, call it sauce. But please don't tell the non-Italian- speaking Italian-Americans that, because they think they invented cooking, and it is absolutely pointless to try to convince them of anything.

Gravy

And I also want to mention that although I do not like gravy on my french fries, some of the best gravy I have ever had was in local eateries in French Canada. Rural Quebecois are wonderful cooks, especially when it comes to foods that are perfect in winter.

Tell us how you really feel, your editorial was quite necessary to 'splain what gravy is!

I second that....???????

@ JR and R/B... come on you guys, you can't tell me that even if you yourself don't eat it, you haven't had a big ol' turkey dinner once or twice a year with GRAVY. Or a home pot roast, etc. Gravy is gravy where I come from and if you think of fries, I can't think of any gravy that would go on them other than a nice brown sauce over the top.
