Hiding a phone number

In the United States, if you want to call someone by either cell phone or land line, yet hide your number from their caller ID so it appears as "Private" or "Unknown", you dial *67 and then the number.

To hide your number when calling someone in the DR, is it the same or is a different series of numbers used?

I just tried to call my Jodetel home phone from my Claro cell phone dialing *67809xxxxxxx and got the error "the number you called is restricted".
I just called my home phone (Claro) with my cell phone (Claro) using

*67809xxxxxxx

and it works, the caller-id shows: Private Caller

Perhaps you have your home phone set up to reject Private Callers!

In the puerto plata area it doesn't work but #31# and the number does
I am curious if you are using a GSM phone (One with a chip) as it seems in some things Claro has different codes for those phones.

For instance to check the balance on Pre-paid CDMA phones you dial *22 and you get a voice announcement, and with a phone containing a chip you can dial *22# (I think) and it will display the information on your phone screen.

Most cell phones have a hide/show number option under settings...
Must be the newer phones, perhaps only the GSM chip phones.
Just as Claro said you can call one number for free, it applies only to the phones with chips, mine is the older type, CDMA.

Why are you hiding? Owe money?

Sometimes you have to hide to get through to people that owe YOU money. I had to use U.S. based phone numbers to show up on callerid in DR to get through to the person ....

When I was working in the prepaid phonecard industry back in the US, I was able to simulate ANY callerid to show up on the outgoing call ha ha

Once we got the client (owing us money) to pick up his cell line by simulating his office line caller id ...

I wish I had those powers today

Good points.

But a loser would both not answer a blocked # or any number nthey don't recognize.

Let's face it: avoiding debts by any means possible is a cottage industry.

Claro: *67 (all Claro srevice codes start with *)
Codetel land line: *67 but will work ONLY after you subscribed and paid for this service
Orange: #31# (all Orange service codes start with #)
Viva: I assume is *67 as well as they use * service codes same as Claro.

Calls from my claro cell

*67809[my Jodetel land line in Santo Domingo] gets the error "call restricted"

*67809[my second Claro cell (the bat phone)] gets the same error'

Ring me from a 'private line on either land line or cell and the phone rings.

Maybe this another case of Claro/Jodetel almost there but not quite.

Thank you Carlos Slim. You've made a once proudly mediocre company into a really pi$$ poor company.
