Hi, my wife and I would like to come for an extended holiday for probably 12 mths.
We've been several times for holidays but would like to go for longer to experience more of DR life.
Does anyone know how the immigration costs work when you overstay your tourist visa?
My mum's other half is from DR and said you used to be able to go to airport and say 'I want to stay another month' and pay upfront. Does anyone know if you can still do this? Or if you just have to pay on exit and if so how much it costs?

Any replies gratefully received.

Pay on exit, very cheap, you will find the list if you search but is something like up to a year is 30us bucks, three months, 10us, those aren't exactly accurate but the cost is less than worth worrying about taking into consideration.

keep in mind that some minor thingies only stay Valid as long as your Visa/Immigration Status is on "Legal/Valid", like for example to keep your Driver's license Valid etc.
Visa overstaying Fees can still be paid on Exit at the Airport, and Yes, they are very cheap, piece of cake not to worry about moneywise, but before you reach the airport to pay the overstaying Fees your Immigrations Status is simply named Illegal, and that lil feature can have fatal effects if something happens, like a simple car accident with You driving, or a simple minor Fight with someone at a Bar/on the Street, in such situations your non-up-to-date-cleared Immigrations Status could be the Maindecider to point all guilt on You and Deport you back Home.
when planning to stay in the Country a full Year,
for that I do not see any problem to use 1 single Day to visit the Immigrations Office in St Domingo and extent the Visitor Visa to 1 full Year.
welcoe to DR1 and our Sunny Isle

the cost is like shown in the link of the Immigrations site.
I also heard like mentioned above, that it can be done in Puerto Plata as well for the Folks on the Northshore, maybe even in santiago, but I do not 'know' that, the folks living there will chime in that Info.
a full Year should run around US$ 70.- as a ballpark,
a pice of cake compared to the money spent on a Full year's vacation.

Put a 1000 Peso Note In Your Passport!

Hand your passport to the immigration agent at the airport. They will stamp your passport and you will leave !!! I have NEVER had a problem in over 15 years.

Immigration office

It can be done in Puerta Plata as well.

So it's possible to go to an immigration office in Puerto Plata and get a tourist visa extension for a year? Does anyone do this as an alternative to seeking resident status? Could you get a Dominican drivers license while on a tourist visa and be legally covered?

You cannot get a DR drivers license without a Cedula.

Do you intend to travel home or visit nearby countries every few months? If so, the statutory visa period resets, and you are no longer considered "illegal."

15 Days - 3 Months: $300 Pesos
3 Months - 9 Months: $500 Pesos
9 Months - 1 Year: $2000 Pesos
1 Year - 1.5 Years: $3500 Pesos
1.5 Years - 2 Years: $4500 Pesos
2 Years - 2.5 Years: $6000 Pesos
2.5 Years - 3 Years: $8000 Pesos
3-5 Years: $12000 Pesos
5 Years+: $15000 Pesos

I believe these are the latest figures, divide by 37 to figure US dollars.
