Hello I'm a young Canadian girl that is really bored in canada and I'm wanting adventure and I have been thinking of possibly moving to the Dominican I'm kinda leaning toward Punta Cana or Santo Domingo. How does one go about getting the Information .. How much money will one need? will I need a visa ? What kind of jobs could a Canadian girl get? of course I have been taking spanish lessons so that I can communicate and I do have a few friends there.. How unsafe is it to live there?

Please do a search on DR1 you are going to make a big mistake moving to DR for a man. You need money to live in DR, Do you want to work for Dominican wages??? Do you have a special skill that someone should hire you and not a local Dominican??? You have been there 3 times on vacation, Living there is a whole other world. read the forums. I know I sound like im putting you down but please read before you make a costly move.

I recommend you move near Higuey and find yourself a nice educated Haitian who speaks plenty of languages, perhaps even Russian, and used to work in a sports shack. He should probably have a kid with some girl that he may or may not be living with - and it is best not to screw for the first 4 years at least.
If you pull that off then you will be fine.

As for money, as much as you can afford to loose in supporting the man, his 2 year old (by then) baby and his "ex"-girlfriend.

Safety - well that rather depends on how gullible you are - so take real good care.

you will not need a visa but you will eventually have to get one for your man.

Train wreck in slow motion.
Love it!

May I suggest this book Amazon.com: Dominican Republic - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture (9781857335279): Ginnie Bedggood, Ilana Benady: Books before going anywhere. It will give you much insight into the DOMINICAN culture, people, history and language.

They also have it on www.Amazon.ca

First learn what this place is!

It is not the Dominican, the dominican is a person or thing it is not a place, this is the Dominican Republic or the DR, clear?

To refer to the DR as the Domnican is a simple show of ignorance and you do not belong here!

Apologies, but it is Sunday and it is traditional here on a Sunday for some long time poster to create a new identity and post a sob-story in the Mars and Venus forum.

On the serious side - the thing you will need the most is good luck, a thick skin and a sense of humour.
If you enjoy your own company, do not get bored easily, read a lot of books and can get used to the bizarre ways of the Dominican system then you should be fine.
There is no work here that would be fulfilling.
Sure, a job in a call center is fine if it is short term or if you have a good reason to get up in the morning and go to work - like a kid, for example.
But as an existence it would soon get tiresome for most people.

It is difficult to make money if you want to be paid to think or to be creative in your work.

Another thing to bear in mind is that you cannot save money here.
To reintegrate back into a wealthier country can be complicated.
Once your savings are eroded, your chances of being able to move back home comfortably are seriously reduced.

You will knock yourself back years - and that can be important if you are young.

I love it but then I am a bit odd - and I do not rely on the D.R. for a living.

You say you have a few friends here, are they spread out all over the island?
There is a lot of space between Punta Cana and the capital, whereabouts are these friends that you speak of located here. As far as adventure, Disneyland would be adventurous and a whole lot safer. Looking for a job as you're learning Spanish, forget about it unless you like working for 200US a month.

OK, Punta Cana and the Capital are worlds apart, not only in distance but in everything else, people, living, costs, everything.
Have you visited the capital? probably an idea before deciding you want to live here, it is not the Caribbean you know from vacation.
Jobs? Call centre is the only option unless you have a degree, TEFL certificate and a couple of years experience, then you can make sh1t money working in a school.
Call centres will pay you 100pesos per hour, you will work about 8 or 9 hours a day and get paid for 7, you will be promised the transport home to save on travel costs and late night problems in the street but it will rarely turn up. You will work 5 or 6 days a week, and you must work one of the weekend days. usually calling the states and so take the working hours into consideration and you are in the office the best part of the day. So you will take home around 14000 to 16000 pesos per month, depends on who you work for, you have no right to be paid here and so they can and will deduct what they want from your salary and call it emergency tax, you will be paid the wage after 1 month, you will not get paid when you leave.

Living, young white girl needs to be in a safe environment, studio apartment furnished will cost you around 15-20,000 pesos per month, possibly need to pay bills, lecy, 1200pesos +or- per month, internet, 1000pesos +or-.
Unfurnished you can get a place for around 10,000 pesos, you will need to buy an inverter, varying costs but can be very expensive, fridge 20,000, sofa 20,000, oven/stove 14,000, bed 14,000, matress 17,000. Cieling fans 4,000 each, fixings and odds n sods 10,000, microwave 4,000, TV 20,000, hi-fi 10,000. Kitchen stuff, use your imagination, linen and towels 7000 +.
That might be a basic set up on a cheap scale shop, you know there is another 30,000 at least of homely stuff to go on that and still no where near a complete homely home.
rent is paid on a 6 month minimum usually 12 month contract with 2 or 3 months upfront (3 if you use and agent, 2 if you go direct) and then 1 month in advance.

Hope this helps.
