I would like to ask the DR1 community-
What are your thoughts, comments, suggestions on Dominican fashion and style and/or some Do's and No-No's.
For example:
What is the most common type of dress and style you see the most?? A certain type of shoe, shirt, pants etc. A certain marca or 'way' of wearing things??
What are some things that you NEVER see??
And what are some things a person should avoid if there intention is to blend in instead of standing out??

The fashion styles vary in DR. Here is how the people dress when going out to party in big cities.

This would fall under DO NOT......unless you DO NOT plan on venturing out of your AI......then you would be fine........Not really.....

JD, they are your average people from santiago's middle class. Walk in to any decent bar in santiago and you will see them. Go to plaza internacional and you will see them. They are no elite or even rich folks, they are your everyday santiago citizens.

I agree, I didn't mean it to sound degrading.

In my mind, the wannabe rich are from the middle class, and dress just like the rich folks.

You can't tell them apart.

yes, there are lots of wannabe folks but it seems, this is the fashion in santiago and even in many places in capital. People like to dress up this way because its the current fashion.

From what I've seen over the last 20 yrs or so, I feel Dominicans are much more fashion conscious than the average person in the U.S. I've been on shopping trips with Dominicans in the U.S. and Europe... and watched, waited as they get ready to go out at night. Quite a ritual. Looking good is important.

Dominican men seem to go with classic attire in their choice of formal or semi casual dress. Dominican women are more willing to take a chance on a color choice or the drape of a dress. Dominicans are more creative and seem to have the ability to take an item of clothing and accessorize to make it something special. While buying a branded item may be important, it seems to be chosen more for it's look, than for the logo.

I think that clothing is also worn with a confidence seldom found in North America. The "I look good and I know it" attitude is very prevalent.

The upper middle class & above Dominican outshines their American counterpart 9 times out of 10 when it comes to fashion. The less affluent are also able to do some amazing things with much less expensive clothing.

And, well, then there's just the brown trash (as opposed to white trash/trailer trash in the U.S.). Tacky, tawdry, and tasteless no matter the country.

For casual visit to the mall or to the supermarket always jeans, never shorts, when in doubt, wear jeans.

Don't get too worked up about having to wear pants at the supermercado or mall (Maybe Blue Mall-pants would be good). I see lots of chicos wearing shorts in these places and especially on Sunday's at the supermarket.

Looks simple enough. Blue jeans (optional white for Ladies), collared cotton shirt, not tucked, top two buttons open or a decorative T-shirt (Avirex type).

Wait a minute, something's missing.. Oh yeah!

Here are some regular street clothes. Even the street attire varies from person to person. Some girls dress up to go to university as if they are going to a disco or a bar.

Here are random pictures of santiagueros in daily life.

Don't venture into the larger U.S. cities much, huh? From what I've seen going out in Santiago and Santo Domingo, the middle to upperclass get many of their fashion cues from the U.S.

When I go out to a club in Santiago or Santo Domingo, I simply dress as if I were going to a club in Washington D.C. or New York. And I've yet to be denied entry.;)

I was thinking the same thing Corsair.
AZB pictures look like people would be dressed going out in a club in NYC, I don't see any differences.

That is the point, the middle to upper middle class people do not live very differently than their counterparts in usa. the casual attire in cities does not mean we have to wear slippers and shorts with a flower printed Hawaiian shirt. Remember, the dominicans do not feel as hot as many gringos do here. They are used to this weather and do not suffer as much as we do in hot weather. This is why they don't have to wear shorts and slipper all day.

Thank the gods, no.. at least not in a few years.

I still feel that what I've seen in the U.S. is more cookie-cutter fashion & what I see here often is more creative... and even when the same items, more creatively mixed, matched, & accessorized.

After looking at the pictures, I haven't seen much for more mature and middle aged women and men. Lots of jeans and tops. Don't more mature or middle aged women and men go out to decent places? These girls look young enough to be my granddaughters!

:surprised:surprised

My first post!!!! wuuujuu....lol....Dominican fashion is exciting in so many ways...im a student at la pucmm (santiago) and i can see such a diverse style on a daily basis, i'll give u guys an example, im friends with one of the richest kids of probably the entire campus, he wears a Cartier watch, lots of Ferragamo shoes and so on, and you can catch him everyday getting together with people wearing gap shirts, unknown brand shoes, etc etc...what im triying to say is that dominican fashion is as diverse as our race and social class...

i do not see anything special about medium class dominicans. picture your city in the summer and there you have it.
poor dominicans tend to wear clothes that are very tight and puta-like (girls) and flashy-blingy, almost gay (boys).
rich dominicans wear a lot of handmade clothes, especially ball dresses.

the most important part is accessorizing, often in a very old fashioned way that is everything has to be the same colour to match: shoes, bag, jewelry, belts. kinda funny, that.

shorts are ok on some occasions even in big cities providing you are below 20 :) i see many young guys wearing shorts for a cinema or a visit to the supermarket.

I have seen a lot of Converse Classic type shoes, worn with Jeans and a typical 'poloche'. But what about accessories?? From what I understand Fossil watches are all the rage.
