Dear Dr. Guzman-

I am a U.S. born with a U.S. passport, have my permanent D.R. residency and am considering dual U.S. and Dominican citizenship.

I was recently told that there are certain U.S. rights that are lost when one has dual citizenship. He also mentioned that U.S. Social Security may be affected.

I would appreciate having your advice on this matter.

(BTW, the same person told me that the reverse--a Dominican born person with dual U.S./D.R. citizenship does have advantages in dual citizenship.)

Mil gracias.

Why not call Social Security and ask them? They have an 800 number you can call. I doubt that having dual citizenship will matter, but the best info is from the horse's mouthttp://www.ssa.gov/pgm/reach.htm
