Hi queridas!

What do you think what would be a fair good deal price for three pretty big langustas? Alive!

I`d insert pictures but do not know how.
Ciao!

It's by the pound or you negotiate.

No rocket surgery required for this type of transaction, because at the end of the day, everything is for sale and it's only worth what someone's willing to pay for it.

Another way to find/buy langostas is to go to the beach at the end of the day....the food shacks are happy to sell you any excess from the day - uncooked.

They weigh them and then you can talk price.

Everybody's happy

I think it's crazy to spend what they do on lobsters in the DR when the ocean is right there.

Tell him 1000 for all three if he can't find any other buyer and they weigh more than a pound each.

Live Maine lobsters are on sale at the local market here in NY for $7.50/pound. They will even cook them for you free in the store. That includes shipping them more than 350 miles, keeping them in a fish tank and even a free pair of rubber bands.

BTW, I would give you a more useful answer if I knew the going price for lobsters. Mike l, WW, can you give us some idea of an actual price per pound? We know that we should negotiate, but it would helpful if someone knowledgeable gave us some idea if we are actually negotiating a good deal, or still paying "gringo premiums".

yes I paid 1000Rd for all three of them. About 1.5LB- 2 LB each.

Still I feel kinda greedy and desperate that I overpaid. I did not sleep well.

I ate one of them alive last night. And freezed two other his friends (or relatives I do not know).

To eat two remaining do I have to thaw them first? Or throw in boiling water right from the freezer?

Please help!!

What is the going price for lobsters?

How long - how much - does it take to get residency and cedula?

How much is a taxi from here to there?

These are questions that may take a lifetime to answer

A la RD..... just wing it.... it is what it is... smile - be happy !!

Impossible questions to answer under almost all circumstances

I bought some a while ago on the autopista, and after hard haggling ended up paying 150rds per pound. I also had 3 lobsters... one huge one and 2 midsizes and these came to 9 pounds in weight.

Do not thaw the frozen ones, before cooking as they will become a mess. Just throw them in frozen, or even better throw them on the grill with some nice herb butter.

Good luck

Boil for 10 minutes for a one pounder, 12-13 minutes for a pound and a half. To check for doneness, pull on one of the legs. When it comes off without a struggle, it should be done. Some melted butter with some Old Bay Seasoning is nice if you want some flavor. Cook them before freezing next time. They will keep for a week cooked in the fridge.

As for the other two being friends, Spiny lobsters are very social critters. There can be a couple hundred gathered under the same shelter. Given their life cycle though, it's unlikely they would be siblings. A market-weight lobster has been in it's adult stage for at least six years(it's first adult stage is about an inch long) and that is after a couple years as planktonic larvae.

3 lobsters weighed in at 9 lbs? and one was bigger than the others? That would mean one was at least 4 lbs...that's HUGE!!!

They should also look like this when done:

bgaanc.jpg

At one place I cooked at in Vermont, we would get 7-9 pound lobsters in a couple times a year from our fish monger. We'd cook them off, get the meat out with a sledge hammer and serve it in salads and pasta dishes. A 9 pounder is about 24" long head to tail with 8" claws and a shell about 1/4" thick. Now THAT'S a big lobster.

and yes, I would normally also cook them before freezing.

btw... anybody know whether you can fresh mussels here? I know you can get them frozen, but I do not think that is quite safe.

The fresh mussels we get in the US are all from Canada(PEI) and rope cultured. We used to get them by the bushel and selling one order of them would pay for the whole bag.

I've tried them frozen and they are always leathery and dry. I think most of the frozen mussels come from Asia. Here is where they are cultured around the world:
